Census to Count ps In Housing On April 1, some 140,000 Census takers will begin a canvass-of about 45 million American dwelling units occupied by more than 150 million per sons. This ' survey will show that there are approximately 20 million more persons in. the United States than-in 1940, and estimates point to an increase of around 8 million dwelling units over the 37,325,470 reported to the Bureau of the Census, U. S. De partment of Commerce, in 1940. People with purchasing power con stitute our consumer markets and in this sense the American market has expanded more rapidly irf the past 10 years than in any comparable period in the nation's history. For con sumer durable goods, the family is considered the buying unit, since these goods are used by all members of the household. The combination of war and post-war prosperity during the last deacde has seen marriage records- soar to new heights, 'increasing the nation's families by more-than 6 nlfllion. .t Business men throughout the country will find this population growth a tremendous new and largely unanticipated market i The 1950 Census of Housing goes much farther than merely counting and reporting on types, structural character, condition, ownership, value, mortgage status, rent, bath facilities, water supply and toilets. lofotinalion also will be collected by the Census takers ; on household facilities : and equipment, such as heating,- equip ment, heating fuel used, electric light ing, type of refrigeration, kithcen sink type of fuel for cooking, radio and television. The 1950 data gathered 'by Cen sus tracts will include information for families and family income in addition to statistics previously reported. Moreover,.- business statistics, par ticularly those relating to retail trade, can also be made available for com binations of tracts in those cities where agreement is reached on the combinations to be made. For the first time, it should be possible on a relatively large scale to correlate for small areas within metropolitian areas statistics on total population, family income, and retail stores and sales classified by broad kinds of business groups. The 'same type of detail also will be available regarding the shift ing importance of downtown shopping areas, secondary shopping areas, and outlying suburban areas. . .. for the first time in census history, statistics will be presented for ap proximately 2,000 unincorporated places. These places, representing population agflomerations of a thou sand or more persons iwill identify an important market of approximately 4 million persons. Unincorporated places having 2,500 or more inhabi tants will also be classified as urban. The gigantic task of tabulating and publishing information obtained in the Censuses of Population, Housing, and Agriculture will begin as soon as reports are sent to the Census "Bureau by its field offices. (Data of interest to those businesses concerned with housing and home equipment will be tabulated 'and published for areas as small as census tracts. It is antici pated by the Census Bureau that final publication of the housing statistics will have been completed b ymid-year of 1951. Some of the data will, how ever, be available earlier in 1951. In ftuMishintr -the Census of Hous ingJ bulletins, the Census (Bureau has adopted a new procedure designed to simplify the use of the statistics. It i& planned ' to , publish a voluma for each state, whereas in 1940, similar information was published by subject. ;,The, many requests received; each year by the Census Bureau or new information indicate that 'business executives have been using Census data in an increasingly important way. The five major Census enter prises now in various stages of com- HOSTESS TO ROOK'CLUB Miss RuBy White was hostess to her rook club Friday evening at her home on Church Street.
