The individual who is willing to jearn from experience can become better educated than the collegian Who has a few degrees for hard work ri bis books. The civilization of this nation can be gauged by the fact that the people spend millions of dollars every fall to watch the players on the gridirons of the nation. After carefully perusing the writ ings of a number of political prog nosticators, we;have come to the con clusion that most of them write what they agitate rather than what is hap pening. The greatest asset in Perquimans County is its people not its wealth. Let's cultivate our greatest asset. FOR SALE MODERN HOME IN Woodland Circle. Has four rooms and bath house. Worry May Be An Enemy "Worrying , over the end of the world," in connection with the hydro gen bomb, endangers "our national health and vitality," declares former Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who says that "the growing hysteria and worry-mongering" will deprive us of the creative drive "we need to help save the world." The chief architect of our amazing victory in the Pacific put his finger on one of the weaknesses Of the nation at the present time. There is no rea son why we should fear the conse quences of the hydrogen bomb and, certainly, it presents no threat great enough to persuade 'us to relinquish our efforts for what we think is the right kind of a world. It may be that a hydrogen bomb, or a collection of them, will destroy human lives sometime in the future. Even so, there is nothing for us to do but to stand firm in our faith and take the consequences. If we fall into a panic because we fear our possible fate, the world will be taken over by those who have the courage to act resolutely. Should Produce Proof The charges made by Senator Jos epn k. Mcuartny, or Wisconsin, re flecting upon the loyalty of officials and employees of the United States Government, have produced something of a sensation, but, in appraising the issues raised, one should make a di stinction between an allegation and the proof thereof. 'So far, little evidence has been -presented which would be convincing to an intelligent jury of twelve unim passiOned, unprejudiced individuals. It may be that Mr. McCarthy will pro duce something more than assertions jbut there is a difference between con demning the positions taken by the State Department, in connection with our foreign affairs, and being an agent of the Communist Government of Russia. One should differentiate between criticism of the foreign policies adopt ed and followed by the State Depart ment and allegations of disloyalty. It may be that our officials in the State Department have made serious irais- takes in their effort to contain Com munism, but this, by itself, does not prove that anybody is working in the interest of Russia. It is worth -noting that in 1919, af ter the first World War, the nation was highly excited over the charges that the Red Government of Russia, then called Bolshevists, was about to start a revolution in this country. The assertion was repeated so often in the Twenties that many Americans were almost afraid to look under-their beds for fear of finding a Iongwhisk- ered Bolshevist The same observa tion is true pf the charges made to day. They can be repeated so often, even if without direct proof, that many Americans will get the idea that our Government is honey-combed with agents of the Soviet Union. , We are yery cognizant of the fact that it la right for Congress to be concerned about laxity, to tha employ ment or appointment of those who represent' the people of this country. r iie we nunc the present inveetiga- being a witch-hunt, we see the possi bility that it may do some good and cause responsible officials to be more careful in the selection of their as sistants and employees. j , Classified ciLels ONE WEEK SPECIAL (Best Grade Rocks.
