Penjuinps Church Services a CHRISTIAN CITIZENSHIP AND . v CO-OPERATION ;:V' International Sunday School Lesson : for September 12, 1954. i Memory Selection: "Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love la the fulfilling of the law." Romans 13:10. - v Lesson Text: ' Roman 13:1-10; ' .? ,1 Corinthians 3:4-9; 1 lalatians 5:13-15. ; , In this day of the airplane, the ra dio and the television, the people of . the world are all neighbors. . It takes : only a few days for an airplane to fly ' completely around the world. But, in "a matter of seconds, a. voice cafa be heard thousands of miles away, and pictures can be transmitted from one corner of the country to the other al most as quickly. y-yi' , Surely, the people of our world are -neighbors but -are they? In. every corner of the globe, there are peop!e , hating each other, fighting each other and killing each other. A large pro , portion of the national wealth of this great, so-called Christian nation is de ' voted each year to the development of ' means of destroying our enemies whoever they may turn out to be. ' Therefore, perhaps now as never be fore, we need to be reminded of our duty as Christian citizens and our need for cooperation with each other for the good of alL , '. ' Paul, in writing to the Christians at Rome, reminded them that they had a two-fold duty that -of being a good Christian citizen, rendering every nec essary and required Service to those in authority, remembering that this ser vice rendered is also being rendered to God. : ' i V;; a a : ; V'i The good citizen does not have to fear police officers, or those in high er legal authority than he. If he lives as a Christian should, he will have done nothing deserving punishment Only those need fear who have done evil breaking the established law of the land. . . , The.Cnrlifian citfctnfpays hufust' V taxes, willingly and honestly, in or : der that he may make a just contri bution to the welfare of his govern ment. He should respect the law by obeying it implicitly and, by precept and example, help in the enforce 1 ment of all just laws. .' The Christian citizen should use the I privilege of the vote to helpv select honest, just men to positions where ; they can use their influence for the ( general welfare and not for the bet ; terment of a privileged few. The . Christian man or woman who fails to ' vote wisely and prayerfully for candi dates for office worthy of the posi i tidns to which they aspire, should cer tainly not complain when those elect ed to office fail , to do what they - should do. ' " : The Christian citizen should be fill ed with such love in his heart for his ifellowmen that he will do all possi ble to better the social and moral con ' ditions of his community. There is al ways a need of and an opportunity for such improvement Working together with other Christian citizens,; much can be done which will make his home community a better and happier place jn which to live, " There is no problem, In human re flations now, or ever, which cannot be Bolved by a sincere exhibition of bro therly love and concern. We are ever reminded of the well-known verse, by . Edwin Markham, which is so true: "He drew a circle that shut me out Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout; . But love and I had the will to win: We drew a circle that took him in." We agree with the statement made, only recently, by Mr! J. Edgar Hoover, I Director of the Federal Bureau of In I vestigation," when he said: ' 1 have leen nrofoundly impressed with the ct that the churchgoing people are i e most substantial group of citizens l the nation," Surely, those who have ' nowledge if God and His. Son,' ana ho are earnestly trying 'to follow jd's commands, will be among the ld's best citizens. : ; i 4 .
