Swansboro, 9:30 . . . Twin City at 10:10 . , . This seems to be In the peean , area; large groves of these trees; rolling farm lands, mostly corn and cotton; sparsely settled communi ty. Not much sign of life. A filling station and that's closed . . . an Ar tesian well, and Matosboro, Ga., 10:85. Change to Route 301. This area is , more prosperous looking. Nice homes, green cover crops on the farms . . Pecan groves and cattle; motor court with palm trees all around; making a very attractive setting, , 10:45. Sal vania a 11 o'clock. Very few auto mobiles are seen in this section. We cross the Savannah River bridge, and enter South Carolina at 11:85. A big highway sign is seen here'. . . "Wel come to South Carolina, the best State, the best roads," and I thought the "best boasting." This appears to be an undeveloped area. Atkinson's, big producers of pecan products. South! Edista, 12:20. Colonial homes on one side of highway and "shacks" on the other. Orangeburg, 12:40 . . . large nice motor courts here all along the highway. We stop for lunch at the "Glass House"; one of a chain of res taurants okayed by AAA .; . . a nice place to stop ... splendid service '. . souvenirs and curios. Lake Marrion, 1:53. Summerton City with ;: nice churches. Manning, a big town 2:10 A restaurant with this sign displayed: "Chat-N-Rest't and "Pudding Swamp" nearby. The next restaurant labeled "Chicken Basket" and then Florence, S. C, at 3:10. Pee Dee River 3:30. Nine farms and coll&rd patches in this area. Mullens 4 o'clock.
