1 Topgy-Turvy
A number of things combined to
produce an unusual situation with
respect to the Presidency and Con
gress.' Democrats generally Tan
well at the local levels, and their
strength was greatly increased in
normally heavily Republican areas'
of the country; Republicans made
inroads with Mr. Eisenhower ; in
normally Democratic sections. It is
indeed a topsy-turvy situation, and
a situation, in which there seems
to be considerable tonsolation for
both 1 parties in' the picture as a
whole. For example, the President
ran well ahead of his party as anf
individual, and local '.. Democrats
captured a lot of offices in Repub
lican territory,
Unity v
The important thing now is to
put the welfare of our country
first, itiat is my purpose, and J.
am confident 'that my Democraic
colleagues will cooperate with the
President when they feel that his
program is best for, the country.
He had that cooperation from Dem
ocrats in the past Congress, and I
see no reason for 9 change. !
AH of u .realize the gravity ofi
the world situation.' The sudden!
world crisis arose at a time when!
it probably caused a great deal of
(people not to want to make' a
change during a period of severe,
international stress. ; In any event,
the election is history.
Thanks
I am deeply appreciative of the
confidence the people of North
Carolina again placed in me. Thank
you everyone. No political office
can be taken for granted. I worked
day and night to get around North
Carolina. It was a physical strain,
but rewarding in so many aspects
that one in political life seldom
thinks of the physical demands.
That is perhaps one reason why so;
many public figures overtax theif!
energies. .

to remember that only through our
efforts to bring happiness to others

ourselves. The selfish life is never
