Th)i iessori fias, a" Its'fTim,' fiiat o .helping, adults sense, the, full meaning of the birth of jesus, the Messiah,, i:iSt yii'jusli M v In studying our lesson text for today, we are" study ihg the fa- miliar story oi me. pirut or i,nrui ouc.- Saviour ' story which . we have learned . by heart frbni our childhood days into adulthood, and one which we pass -on to our childrenr with special s emphasis , each Christmas as we celebrate I the Christ child's Jbirth .with en ' actment of the manger 'scene in every church and Sunday school .' classroom a ' siory which"1 loses none of its beauty and meaning through repetition. -r -i- ' Another facet of. this chapter in the Book' of Luke, which is an integral part of the story of Jesus, is the story of the presentation of the child Jesus in the Temple. Only Luke gives us the story of this f presentation. . In Studying these passages we see that Jesus Was subjected to all the require ments of the Jewish religious cul ture, and that his whole earthly life involved a 'divine errand. We read of the ancient Simeon's joy when he received in his arms "the consolation of Israel.", Simeon, a devout and spiritually, sensitive man, was profoundly certain that he would live to see the'Deliverer whom God would send to' redeem his chosen people, and also to re deem all mankind. His irords on the occasion of the presentation of Christ in the Temple reveal plain-; Iv his conviction that this Child of I the Hiehest not onlv would reflect I ' glory on Israel, but .also would 1 shed holy light upon all the rest ;of -mankind. And the words of Simeon to Mary, the mother of Jesus, set in focus' the difficult role of the Messiah; some' of his own people Would not acknowl edge land, acclaim him' some would actually scorn him. And his obedience to God would have to eclipse his relationship even to his mother. We see how this prophecy was borne out when, re- ( turning from Jerusalem from the I feast of the passover, Mary and Joseph missed their son, and, go ing back to search for him, found him seated in the Temple, hear ing the" elders speak, and asking them questions, astonishing all who heard him with his under standing and answers. Upon Mary reproaching' him for all the fear and anxiety she and Joseph had gone through while they were searching for him, the child an swered: J'How is it that ye sought me? Wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business?" (Luke 2:19).' iThus we see, that Jesus, himself, saw himself not as a Messiah to the Jewish nation, but a Saviour to all mankind. When Jesus came into the world redemption took on a new dimen sion.. It was for everyone, not just a chosen few. How can we forget the rebuke Jesus thrust out tothose who felt spiritually secure when he said; "Those who are . well have no need of a phy sician,- but those who are sick." (Matthew 9:12). Both his Words and his actions throughout his life constantly showed that his heart was filled with love for all man kind. Jesus revealed God to all peotfle-to the lowly as well as ! to the' highest iri the land. -? The essence of Christianity is that God became flesh in order that men 'may behold the glory and grace of God. It is through the Incarnation that God express ed himself. Jesus, through enter ing the flesh, proclaimed that Cod is among as, and that our boiics, too, may become God's If temples. The Word, In beccj flesh, pointed to the spark e- vinity In our own lives. '. We would do well-to pause t..J ask ourselves if our church is do ing its share in witnessing for Christ. ' Are we holding fast to our sense of Christian fellow ship? ! Are we passionately con cerned, as a body of Christians, for the rsalve'itfori and1 welfare, of others?
