SHERIFF OF PERQUIMANS COUNTY Sunday School Lesson RICH TOWARD GOD International Sunday School Lesson for May 29. Memory Selection: "Lay up yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. (For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Matthew 6:20-21. Lesson Text: Luke 12:13-34. Matthew 6:19-34; ! nD IIS QD C CS DD dJIED 4 In our lesson this week we should seriously face this ques tion: "What is the Christian standard of values?" - Jesus was firmly convinced that "things" are dangerous for the spiritual life for some . peo ple because we are inclined to keep thinking about our posses sions. A man who is continu ally mulling over his business in his mind soon discovers that he is a possessed man his busi nesses possess him, instead of the other way around. We are reminded of Peter and John, who were going to the temple one day. Both were without money as they were ap proached by a beggar asking for almsi Peter said to this man in need: "I have no silver and gold, but I give you what have; in the name of Jesus Christ . . . " (Acts 3:6). Peter, had an inner quality, an inner spirit or. power, that lar sur? passed monetary values. We in this cay and age need this lesson, too. We have placed too much emphasis on getting money, we neea 10 iei uur youth be taught by precept and by example that money and possessions are of value only as instruments for the good Hie. They have no intrinsic value in themselves. In Matthew 6:22 we read: "So, if your eye is sound, your whole body will be full of light." Jesus here is emohasizins the value of singleness of purpose. He knew that man needs inte gration. Integration comes about when a man centers his life on .one thing. Unfortunately some reenter their lives on one earth ly thing; a house, a home, a fam ily, a child, a business, a family estate, a party, or a club. Jesus, however, in his infinite wisdom, knew that these small things, these small purposes, often let lone down. True and lasting in tegration comes only when one builds his hopes on God and lives continually in his pres ence. The man whose life is centered in Christ subordinates all else to this one great and abiding Cause and Being. Jesus said: . "You cannot serve God and Mammon." (Matthew 6:24b). Mammon, translated quite literally, means "proper ty." He who thinks continually about his property simply has no time to think of the greater issues of life. He has no time to think about eternity, and all its vast and awesome implica tions, nor does he build for eternity. Strangely enough, we who are the only creatures of our earth who have the poten tialities of eternity, fail to build for that one event. The king dom of God is not a place, but a state or condition in which the mind and soul exist. ' : Only too often our view does not include that which God! sees. We look beyond, or in front of, his concerns. Consider, just for one moment, what evils would be eliminated if we but took the time to look through the "spec tacles of God," so to speak to see tnings as nis eyes woum interpret them! Jesus is getting at . The very heart of our needs in this won derful sermon. We must take these teachings seriously. These are indeed the marks of the ci tizens of the kingdom of God. Jesus yearns that men may put their trust in God, not be come anxious (distracted) over things. Things, alas, so distract, distort, twist, corrupt, blind and drive mankind. We sorely need to remember the rock from which we were hewn the rock which 'is from God himself, in whose image we are made. Fun damentally we are both moral and spiritual beings. We have much more important things to do than merely be concerned with drinking and feasting. Let man fulfill 'his nature, and OM will care for him. And what is his nature Have we not already answered that ques jtsion when, as we have Just noted, we claim he is made in the image of God? He) is made for truth, justice, mercy, kind- A, """Hi 0 SI 'Sit! i Sf III THB CHIWCH fOH ALL . . ; i IH ' ' AUL FOR THC church H j nnritt- iV -ir-rrmn i V.,i' ', U V".0""1'.
