Costs Up
The latest monthly report from
Washington shows that ' living
,-cosis were up again m the past If
morith 'Xhjt ; means? mseij

record high, in spite of the re
cession we are inand have
been in for some months now.
' Living costs cannot continue
to ga up while the economy re
mains, depressed, without caus
ing . severe 'ftafdship to manyfi
lower and lower ,'. middle class
families. Already there are bet
ter than ' four ' millions unem
ployed and every increase in liv
. ing costs, is a blow to these
Americans. . ' "
Yet there is reason to believe
that a gradual increase in the
cost of living is t be expected
as normal. What is needed if
this trend is not to be harmful
is a steady, even if small, rise in
income. ". ;;,;. :
This has been achieved in
most of the recent years under
. the Eisenhower administration
though the farmer has come off
unusually badly in this matter of
annual net income increase.
Nevertheless, , as long as the
people's net 'income can be in
creased, even modestly, annually,
cost of living increases will not
be as disturbing as they appear
on the surface. For if the econ
omy is to experience a gradual
, inflation which it has ever since
; the Revolution : then costs of
living will inch up as earnings
of the average American inch

in ' studyin. lie lesson lout
lined for us today,, each oi., us
as an adult Christian will want
to consider 'this questions what
may the new birth mean for meT
....As we eome to the third les
son in this series dealing with
the work of Christ as set forth
in the GosDel of John, we need
to recall, in caDsule form, the
oath we jhave already traveled.
We have seen that the Gospel
stresses four- great themes
revelation, incarnation, new
birth (regeneration) and new life.
Jesus is interpreted as one whoi
reveals' God and brings abundant
life. - - , iJ
In last week's lesson we saw
what the gospel -writer under
stood the new life to be. , It is
a life of fellowship with God,
and Christ, a .life of belief, a
life of. love,, and fi life of joy.
It is a life which abides through
changing circumstances a n a
emerges vitorious over the (trib
ulations of experience. Ir is, In
short,' a- God-centered, life.; As
the gospel Iwriter so eloquenuy
states: "Jesus as the tnrisi can
bring this new life to your.
Today's -lesson follows natural
ly from this point s, mere is
thA nnssihil tv of newness or
life, how does one enter into it?
What are the conditions in terms
nt whirh wr aualifv for it? The
author of this Gospel has evi
dently - thought deeply about
these matters, and. speaka to the
Questions we raise, in tne .un
forgettable story of Nicodemus
he drives homp his points-there
must be' a newsperson if there
is -to be new life! To be born

which the individual respond) in
faithfulness - to tha Spint(lof
Christ. In . terms of the1 new
birth, the -'individual is a new
person in;1 spiritual sense, t
.j Every .Individual is an entity,
and individual in his own right,
with different thought processes,
different standard, different
backgrounds and different ! ap
proaches to any given set of cir
cumstances. Bearing this in
mind, there are still some fun
damental steps along the way of
spiritual rebirth which all Chris
tians, can follow, . ',

kual'growth. There ia 1 little
hope for the. complacent, or the
self-satisfied', person, 1
Second, we need to have a
clear and isharp vision of the
new life Godi? brings through
Christ ; One comes to an aware
ness of a possibility he had nevJ
er sensed before. i
Thirrf.'fwe must know sincere
repefttance. This does not he.
cessarily.; mean ; self-rejection; it
merely means sincere regret for
having made so little of life
heretofore,; or having lived on
lower levels. In the light of the
new "and finer Vision one looks
to the past saying, "I shall do
something better, and be some
thing better." . ,:
And, lastly, one must have a
sense of responsible 1 decision.
The new birth is marked by
the exercise of the : powei to
choose. One chooses to respdnd
with air his being" to God. To
live life in the light of the high
est that one has come to know
about God is the sincere purpose
of the Christian. ' i
After these initial steps, have
been takeh, there i Jtill ample
room for growth. " I
However, having taken ? these
steps, one has - new direction
for his life, and a new dedication
in that life. He 'has been! born
on a new level of . experience.
It -has been the experience (of
countless numbers 4unonv 'tis
that coming to know, Jesus 'as
the Christ has led them tb this
new birth we seek. He htu re
vealed people to themselves, In
spiring in them a sense of need
H has revealed to them a (vis km

inspired repentance, and deepest I
dedication and purpose. He hast
given 'life in His name!"
