The rules of the competition are simple to follow. , The con testant first writes down hi3 or her favorite baked recipe, des cribing the measurements and ingredients accurately. ' Then, the contestant is asked to write a short essay .in 100. Words or fewer on the topic, "Why I Want To Go To College." The essay will be the first of the contest and from these who are chosen winners, the winners will then attend a Bake-Off to be held in Goldsboro on No vember 18 and 19 at which time 24 y contestants will compete. The Regional Bake-Off will be held in Raleigh when 12 areas compete there on December 16. Alt - material must be original, and no pack-i aged recipes will be accepted." i In addition to the supply at the Pyrofax Gas distributor's showroom, entry blanks may al so be obtained in this area at local motion picture theatres where "Susan Slade" will be shown. This forthcoming Warner Bros, film stars - Connie Stevens ,and Troy Donahue, who are fea tured on all posters and entry blanks for the contest. In ad dition, a supply of entry blanks will be found at record shops where Conniu Stevens' records are sold. More than 800 essays will be selected at the outset by the judges, and their authors will then be notified of the time and place in their area where one of 36 local baking compe titions will take place. Prizes here will include silver bowls and 32-piece sets of stain; less flatware arranged in a ser vice for eight. At these compe titions each teen will have an opportunity to prepare his or her favorite recipe for a board of judges. Finally, the 36 top winners from the local competitions will be sent to one of three Contest Grand Finals that will take place in three different cities on successive Saturdays: Decem ber 2 in Albany, N. Y.; Decern ber 9 in Indianapolis, Ind.; and December 16 in Raleigh, N. C. Each of the 36 finalists will receive transportation to and from the Contest Grand Finals for themselves and one adult companion. In addition, each will receive a $10 allowance to cover the cost of cooking uten sils and ingredients necessary to the baking of the recipe submitted. And here are the prizes that will be awarded to winners at the finals in the three cities: three $1,500 scholarships to the college of the winner's choice; a $500 bonus if the winner's household is already a Pyrofax Gas user; a Caloric ,gas range valued at $500, and an identical range that will be presented to the home economics classroom of the winner's school. Runners-up will divide 12 Ca loric gas ranges valued at $500 and 21 transistor radio sets. Escapes Death James Bandalos, a 38 year old Lynhaven, Va., man, narrowly escaped possible death in Hert ford Monday afternoon shortly after 5 o'clock when he failed to make the curve approach at the south end of the Hertford bridge and rammed his truck between the bridge and a power line pole.
