CHRISTIAN MATURItY International Sunday School , Lesson for December 31 Memory Selection: "Let ; us eave the elementary ' doctrines it thrist and gt on to ftiatur ty." (Hebfe 6:1). : f Lessoft text! t Corinthians 13 iphesians 4:11-24. ' , i this "passage, and also in He brews 5;12b-14. This The purpose of our study to day is to point out some of the most outstanding marks of Christian maturity and to dis cuss ways in. which we may at tain this maturity. In this con nection it is fitting that this .ast lesson in our present series should deal with maturity, lor it t lis tHe goal toward whicn tne growth discussed in tne otner lessons should move. In the New Testament there are various passages, that "rec ognize the need for spiritual growth or progress toward ma turity on the part of the Chris tian. Second Peter 1:5-7 : as sumes the ' possibility of : such growth and advises the readers to strive for it. r In Philippians 3:12-6 Paul acknowledges that he himself has not achieved full maturity but is "straining for ward" to attain it, and implies that such an attitude in itself indicates something of maturity of mind. : ' According ti Hebrews, increas ing understanding of even more profound truths of the Christian faith is a mark of maturity as well as an obligation of every professing Christian. Certainly religious ignorance is one serious indictment that can be leveled against us today. The commadd is to love God with all one's mind and to go beyond the elementary doctrines. The faith of childhood or that of a . new convert is not enough ror all the later years. It should grow jn depth and breadth: as we.: injaw. ' MeW , iexberiences. Ntf thinking. t Christian, , man; or wo- j mart, will' 'deny this.1 " " 1 1 ' ' t 1 t In his letter to the Cbrihth- ian Church Paul, pointed out that the 'factions- that had bfeen caus ed ; by j the jealousy and" strife among the members, with result ing divisions f irt the" "church, were a mark, of t inenaturity. (I Corinthians 3:11-4), " ft. second mark is indicated in Jwas the inability td assimilate solid food-that" is, the greftter? and more profound ideas of Chris tianity. , j . Because divisions f in the church : were an evidence of im maturity, it is not surprising that the Book , of ; Ephesians stresses;: unity as a charapteris tic(woif maturity. Paul writes! :6f maintaining "the ; unity of the snirit in the bond of peace" and of "building up the body of Christ until we all attain to the unity of the faith." In Verse 16 of Ephesians 4, "From whom the whole body upbuilds itself in love J. . " the general meaning is clear. The writer was speaking of. the pro gress toward maturity ; of the Christian community - the church.1 He uses two1! terms to refer to it, , "growth" .'and "up building." Christ is the source of the growth, but the, grace he supplies is channeled through the individual members as each works properly. So each makes his own contribution, and all are mutually interdependent, and the "body" as a Whole grows in and through thert. , . , As we look around us, can we make an honest claim to having achieved this wonderful goal? Are we really mature, in our erowth towards Christianity? As we realize the areas oi our shortcomings, let us prays Our Father, grant Us the grace and courage' to grovr, into mature manhood and womanhood w the Christian faith, that we may be worthy members 6f the body whose head is Christ. ?
