In our study of Christian discipleship we examine to day one of the sins against which Jesus urged an unend ing war the sin of hypo crisy. f It is a sin to which all of us are prone, and it is all the more insidious because despising it we are loath to admit that we are often guilty of it. Our Scriptural verses for to d a y : pinpoint instances where the outward trappings of faith became a cloak for inward, spiritual deceit. So Intent were the Pharisees in preserving the rituals of their faith, that they became insensitive to the true mean ing of what that faith meanti In studying these chapters in Luke, we cannot help but b(! impressed with the ab horrence in which Jesus, Son of. God, held such hypocrisy, and in the light of His words, we should be moved to examine our inner thoughts and feelings in this regard. Are we as self-professed and publicly-declared Chris tians as guilty as the Phari sees? Do we claiming to aspire to all the attributes of Christianity feel the lov ing concern for our fellow men that Christ demanded of His followers and still com mands today? Do we count our blessings, and give heart felt thanks for them,, and share them with the less for tunate among us? Do we suffer in. silence when some one wrongs us, or does us an injustice, and forgive them for the errors of their ways? iDo we continue' in our for bearance still, and turn a loving countenance 'toward them, as Jesus himself did, or do we turn on them in fury, waxing loud in our de nunciation, and act spitefully toward them? Are we mere ly giving lip service to our professed faith? - Does our church (and what it stands for) have a place in our life one day a week or does it have a place in our lives seven days a week? And before we answer: "Of course I am concerned for my . neighbor;' of course I am mindful of my blessings; of course I forgive my ene miesI am a Christian" we will do well to remember that God sees what is in our hearts, and judges us accord ingly. . . .. - - For Jesus, in rebuking the Pharisee for the importance he placed on outward ob servances of his creed, was drawing attention to the mis taken idea held by that re ligious group, that if their bodies were clean and unde f iled during their devotions, then they themselves were acceptable to God. A clean heart greatly desired by the Lord was not so easily attained. Nor could it 1 be h attained by (he formality of I the washing of hands. . Again, the Pharisees were meticulous in tithing, for such was the law. They completely overlooked the fact that, tithing was not a legal matter, to a true Christian. They also failed to recognize the important aspect of such things i as all of which were ' also judgment, mercy and faith, enumerated in their laws. Today we face the same traps as those that beset the Pharisees. Too often, With out our being conscious of it, we become overly engrossed with material riches, and neglect the riches of the spirit. We fail to recognize that material riches con crete possessions are the most illusionary ' riches of all. The intangible riches of the spirit a. happy and lov ing heart, a generous and out-going spirit; a sense of responsibility and a willing ness to serve whenever and wherever an opportunity c curs these are the only riches worth possessing, and these are the only offerings we can make to God. with K a certainty of their inecent. ability1 In His-sight; How rich we arel '' (These tttumnm are basal on eutllnee of the Interna tional Sunday School Lessons, copyrighted by the Interna tional" Council of Religion CdooaOe and ased by part ' ' raw A MATTER OF ylEWpOINf lTTfYj'-ri't-j . mm : kV' t; f - V ' ... L 1 THE CHURCH FOR ALU At-u for The church The Church is the greatest factor an earth for the buildin of charac ter and aod citizenship. It is a store house of spiritual values! Without a atron( Church, neither democracy nor civilization can survive. There are four sound reasons why every . person should attend services regu larly and support the Church. Thiy are: (1) For his own sake. (21 For his children's sake. (3) For the sake of his community and nation. (4) For the sake of the Church itself, which needs his moral and material support. Pan to so to church nsjr larly and read your BibU daily. What is as thrilling to a child as winter and a nice fresh snow? But for an adult, shopping-.or work ing in winter weather, nothing is. more miserable This goes for so many things. What looks goo4 to one person looks terrible to another. What one perbon r. enjoys doing, another dislikes. What agrees with one disagrees with another. , i i V Jj There is nothing wrong with this. We have a sight to our individual likes and, dislikes, to our individual opinions. We also have the right to know the basic things in life, the truths that apply to everyone. These are the foundation blocks upon which all else is built. This is the kind of knowledge given to us byflthe Church. .:'''':.- v . '; ;":.; If you, have been thinking that church-goers-are conformists people who believe what they are told and let it go at that then you've heen making a mistake. Because a group ef houses are built uptm the same firm ground does not "mean that each house cannot be separate unto itself. Because a man goes to church does not mean that he is one of a mold Try it, and see. '.4v. . . . . . . . . . . ..... . j j CSBtTtM 1HT Kruter 44T0' Styict, VtrsaUva, va.
