Phillips, Sr., of Route 1, Hertford, was re cently awarded the Navy Commendation Medal at Marine Corps Air Station, Beaufort, S. C, lor service in Vietnam. His citation reads in part: "For heroic achievement while serving as a port side gunner with Marine Medium Helicopter Sqd., 364 in connection with op erations against insurgent comoiunist (Viet Cong) forces in the Republic of Viet Nam. On March 28, 1966, while participating in an emerg ency medical evacuation of if o u r wounded Marines during operation Indiana north of Quang Ngai, Phillips displayed excep tional fortitude and pro fessionalism in providing accurate and deadly sup pressive fire during his aircraft's first two attempts to land in a hostile zone. On the third attempt, a landing was made despite continuing heavy enemy fire, and again Phillips ef fectively suppressed the incoming fire during the time the helicopter was in the zone. His intrepid fighting spirit ::nd valiant effort throughout contri buted greatly to the afety of his aircraft and his fel low crewmen during the hazardous mission. By his outstanding professional skill, determination and loyal devotion to duty throughout, Phillips up held the finest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Members of Lieut. The presentation of outstanding community "service" awards :, was 'made by Sidney Harmon, who presented Mayor V. N. Darden with th? Outstand ing Community Service Award. ' In making the award, Mayor Darden's life was reviewed. He came to Hertford in 1910 at the age of 18 to serve as an apprentice clerk in a de partment store. After three ' years in Hertford, he became a partner in the store and now is sole owner of Darden's Depart ment Store. ; Mayor Darden's public service began when he was elected to the Town Commission in 1937. Short ly afterwards he was ap pointed Mayor of the Town of Hertford to fill Miss Saunders Taken In Death Miss Martha Emily (Mat tie) Saunders, 86, passed away Monday night at 7:25 in the Albemarle Hospi tal. She was the daughter of the late Albert and Eliza Chappell Saunders and a member of Cedar Grove Friends Meeting in Wood land. 1; . She was a native of Per quimans County but resid ed in Chowan County for a number of years. "Miss Mattie" was a re tired school teacher. ' In later years .she spent much time for united peace throughout the world. Darden has continually been re-elected Mayor and has served continuously in this capacity for 29 years. Along with his duties as Mayor, he assumed the title of chief of police, fire chief and town man ager. He holds a 50-year service certificate with the Fire Department. During his tenure as Mayor he has seen Hertford go from dirt streets and brakish drinking water to a town with all modern utilities. Mayor Darden points to the construction of the construction of the Muni cipal Building in 1952 and the replacements of two slum areas with new low rent housing, as two of his most significant achieve ments. Mayor Darden is known as the man who gets the job done without a lot of ifanfare. Harmon also presented Miss Thelma Elliott with an Outstanding Commun ity Service Award Mrs. EI don Winslow, sister of Miss . Elliott, .accepted the award in the absence of Miss Elliott. In makine the presentation Harmon said "Miss Elliott is a native- of Perquimans Coun ty. She graduated from East Carolina College, and holds an AB and Masters degree. She returned to Hertford in 1948 to assume the principal's position at t h e Hertford Grammar School. She has been ac tive in the First Methodist Church as a Sunday School teacher. She is a lifetime member of the PTA. U past president of (Delta Kcippa G'j'mrna, which is a national honor society for teachers.
