He resolutely refused to allow disappointment and hardship to silence his witness for Christ. The basic principle of this Lesson, therefore, is to give guidance in awareness that the Christian the true Christian must often witness for Christ despite his circumstances. Paul, arraigned before Festus, the Roman pro curator of Judea, posed a problem for Festus, Ac cording to Roman law, having appealed to Caesar, he was entitled to be heard by Caesar. Thus Festus faced a grave decision) basically convinced that Paul had done nothing to warrant the death sentence, yet he was bound (by law) to give cognizance to Paul's request for shearing before Rorael He therefore referred the case to Herod Agrlppa 0, who, with his sister, Bernlce, arrived in Caesarea on an official visit. This was a move welcomed by Paul. Since he had already made an appeal of his case to Caesar, Paul was under no legal obligation to make a further public appearance In his own defense. However, for two long years he had languished in prison at Caesarea, and-to one of Paul's dedication -this was a stalemate bound to chafe his restless spirltl He had few to whom he could witness for Christ, other than his dally companions his Jailers and those who visited him. And while It must have been a matter of no light Import to Paul to contemplate appearing before a member of the Herodlandynasty(as witness their long history of persecution of Christianity) It was, never theless, an opportunity for Paul to bear Christian witness before a people who needed such witness desperately. Paul spoke with great earnestness and conviction. Although his hands were physically chained, his tongue was not; he described in great detail how he had vigorously persecuted those who professed to the Christian faith, but how he had seen the Light, and had repented. Nevertheless, despite the rude Interruption in his testimony Interjected by Festus, who asserted that he (Paul) must be mad, Paul clung resolutely to the matter at hand, and addressed Agrlppa, who was a Jew, driving bis point home where It would be most telling. For it was certain that Agrlppa had full knowledge of the Christian movement; he certainly believed in the prophets, and it followed that he should also believe in the Christian message. Should he refute such a belief, by saying that he did not believe the prophets, he would be in grave trouble with the Jews who were present. Should he profess his belief in the prophets then he must surely admit that Jesus was the Christ of prophecy! Expediency dictating his move as, alas, It often , dictates the moves of those of the present day who ' outwardly profess to be Christians Agrlppa side stepped Paul's appeal to become converted to Christianity, and let the case go on before Caesar. Thus an obviously weak man played an important part in the history ot Christianity, for an appear ance In Rome, an opportunity to testify to the Gospel, was one of Paul's most driving ambitions! So -now that all bis hearings were over, to Rome he would got , From this lesson dedicated Christian will learn that no matter how adverse the circumstances In which they find themselvee they can be turned to earnest witnessing for Christ if the will to witness is there!
