sioners meeting here this month
adopted a resolution that the
Special Election to be held on the
9250,000.00 Bond Issue for a
hospital facility, and there be
submitted to the voters in the
same election, the question of
the levy of a maintenance tax
for the operation of the facility.
The rat control budget was
amended In the amount of $18.00.
The Commissioners au

The Perquimans County
Health Careers Club held Us first
meeting Tuesday, August 12, in
the school cafeteria.
The meeting was called to
order by President, Shirley
Gregory. Devotion was given by
Anna Chesson and Kay Dall.
The President welcomed all
new and old members, after
which a list of this years activi
ties was read.
Minutes of the May meeting
and Club Council Meeting were
read. The roll of members was
called.
For the program, Margaret
Mansfield, one of the nine Candy
Stripers gave a report on their
Candy Striper work, its re
quirements, and enjoyment.
Mrs. S, O. Bateman, sponsor
of the Candy Striper, thanked
each of the girls for their hard
work and cooperation. She asked
if there were any others in
terested in the Candy Stripers
Program to contact her.

Tours Museum
The New Hope 4-H Club went
on a tour of the Museum of the
Albemarle and ofSupak and Sons.

Mrs. Betty Jeanne Sanders
of Elizabeth City has been ap
pointed Local Community Co
ordinator with the N. C. Council
on Mental Retardation by Exe
cutive Director Robert L. Denny.
Mrs. Sanders will serve
Camden, Chowan, Pasquotank
and Perquimans counties and
will work with the local planning
councils on mental retardation.
She will serve as a liaison per
son between agencies serving the
retarded and as a point of re
ferral for services for the re
tarded. Mrs. Sanders' first project
will be to conduct a survey of
the retarded in the area to find
out what type of programs are
needed and where to start.
"I am especially Interested
in dental care for the retarded,
and establishing special physical
education classes for retarded
children to aid their muscle
coordination and their overall
recreation program," she said,
Mrs, Sanders added that a
local civic organization Is in
terested in obtaining a speech
therapist for the area.
She continued, "I feel that our
area Is relatively unexplored in
the field of mental retardation.
There is much to be done, and I
am certainly excited and en
thusiastic about the Job."
Mrs. Sanders was born in
Bayboro and attended the Col
lege Of the Albemarle and Old
Dominion College. She was grad
uated from East Carolina Uni
versity where she is now work
ing on her master's degree in
Special Education. She has serv
ed as a special education teach
er for the past three years. Mrs.
Sanders is a member of the Pas
quotank County Committee for
the Retarded.

Sponsor Supper
The Student Council and the
Beta Club have joined forces.
They are sponsoring a supper

Capt. C. R. BUSH DIES IN
WASHINGTON: Captain Charles
R. Bush died suddenly at his
home in Washington, D, C. last
Thursday at the age of 72.
Captian Bush was well-known In
and around Hertford, having
lived for sometime on his farm
in Durants Neck, after retiring
50 years of service as a rail
road engineer on a run between
Washington and New York.
During his service with the rail
road none of his trains had ever
been involved in a major acci
dent and that no one had ever been
UUed while riding one of his
trains. His widow, Mrs. Net
White Bush, was formerly of
Hertford, a sister of Mrs. G. T.
Hawkins, of Hertford,

Cpl. Robert L. Sadler, 20, a
native of Elizabeth City, and
a resident of Durants Neck, was
killed Sept. 6 in Quang Tlnh,
Republic of Vietnam. He was
serving with the U, S. Marines,
Co. B. 1st. Battalion. He was a
member of the Methodist
Church.
He is survived by his parents,

number of years, PTA members
of the county school will again
act as subscription agents for
the Perquimans Weekly and be
gin their annual drive securing
new and renewal subscriptions
as a project to raise funds for
PTA programs during the year.
The drive this year will begin
Monday, October 2nd. and run
thru the entire month, ending on
Tuesday, October 31st.
The annual project to raise
funds Is conducted by the PTA's
of theHertford Grammar School,
Central Grammar School and
Perquimans Union School, each
of the schools receive a gener
ous commission for each sub
scription secured.
The Perquimans Weekly is
urging all persons who now sub
scribe to the paper, to check
their subscription, if it is out,
to renew during this drive In
order that you may not miss re
ceiving your paper, because
at the end of the drive, anyone
who Is behind In their subscript

Taken For The Navy

NROTC qualification test are now
available according to Mrs.
Sidney Harmon (counselor) at the
Perquimans High (school). This
nationwide examination will be
given on December 9, 1967, and
all eligible male high school
seniors and graduates may apply,
sonal interviews, medical exam,
lnatlons, and other factors, Mrs.
Harmon explained, over 1,700
young men will enter the
Regular NROTC Program as
midshipmen at NROTC units in
52 colleges and universities
throughout the nation. Male citi
zens of the United States who will
be at least 17 but not yet 21
on June 30, 1968, and who are
now high school seniors or grad
uates, may be eligible to apply
for the test. Those who attain
qualifying scores will be Inter
viewed and given medical ex
aminations next January and Feb
ruary. A successful candidate re
ceives financial aid for four
years of college. This Includes
tuition and educational fees,
books, uniforms, and $50.00 per
month subsistence allowance. Af
ter successfully completing bac
calaureate degree requirements
and naval training, graduates
are commissioned as officers in
the U. S. Navy or Marine Corps.
Regular NROTC midshipmen
participate In three summer at
sea training periods with varl
ous naval units. These periods
assist them in learning about the
variety of Interesting and chal.
lenglng opportunities available to
them as naval or marine corps
officers.

The tour is scheduled for
October 16, a Trallway bus will
leave Elizabeth City at 6 a.m. on
Monday, October 16 and will
stop In Hertford to pick up pas
sengers at 6:30, then on to Eden
ton to pick up those persons go
ing on the trip.
At mid-morning a stop will
be made at Straw Valley Craft
Center. And the bus will arrive
in Gatllngburg at 6 p.m.
On October 17, following
breakfast a bus tour will be at
disposal for Scenic and Craft
tour of the area. The afternoon
will be spent at Gatllngburg, on
Oct. 18th, leaving Gatllngburg
for Ashevllle and a tour of High
land Guild and other craft cen
ters and will return home, ar
riving in Elizabeth City by 8:30,
if the schedule goes as pre
pared. In order to insure the trip,
reservations are needed, with a
deposit at least by Sept. 15 with
the balance to be paid by Oct. 10.
This is the season of the most
beautiful fall foliage, and is ex
pected to be a highly interest
ing tour as well as a scenic one.
