Ford Motor Company Closed Down For Strike Negotiations 3-The Perquimans Weekly, Hertford, N.C., Thursday, September 21, 1961 NOW YOU KNOW Mohammed All was the ottoman viceroy of Egypt from Following la a statement by Henry Ford n, chairman of the board, Ford Motor Company: . Ford Motor Company has been f closed down by a strike that Is totally unjustified and complete- ( ly unnecessary. i Because we would not accede to the unconscionable demands of a powerful union, we are pay- 4lng a stiff penalty. Our em ployes, our stockholders, our dealers, our customers, thous ands of supplier firms and mil lions of others are forced to suf fer the consequences with us. This Is unjust and, in every sense of the word, tragic in its implications for the whole na tion. At a time when our country needs every ounce of economic strength, there can be no de fensible reason to shut down one of the major business con tributors to America's eco nomic well-being. I deplore the action of the UAW in forcing Ford into this situation. I am sorry that we do not have laws that effectively prevent the use of this kind of bludgeon against the public In terest. . But , I do not for one minute regret our decision to take this strike rather thansur render to an unrealistic set of Barclay Bourbon urn i.wiif . wurtwu 48 MONTHS OLD $955 $0)25 Cm 45 QUART PINT mmm ioutioN wni key- u pioof jaj, iaicuy a co, itMirto, pioha, iu. union demands. The strike will be costly, but the effects of an un sound settlement would be far more pervasive, longer-lasting and, In the final analysis, even more costly. Ford Motor Company made a fair and generous offer to the UAW. It would have provided wage increases of 13 cents an hour for the first year - a 4,1 per cent Increase in that year alone. Over the three-year term of the contract, wages would have risen a minimum of 34 cents an hour. We offered the continued protection of cost-of-living allowances and we offer ed to Increase the employes' basic pension rate by 24 per cent. In addition, we proposed a number of Important im provements In other employe benefits. The UAW flatly rejected this Camden To Sell Used Grain Bins CAMDEN - Ten used grain bins will be sold In Camden, at public auction Friday until all bins have been sold.
