Of these one-third were children. Many fires are started by cigarettes and if you are a smok er, keep this In mind. Another major cause of fires consists of faulty chimneys and heating sys. terns. Most players find it difficult to count out a hand, but any one willing to undertake the task quickly discovers that the difficulty is more imaginary than real. The only technical skiU required is the ability to count to 13, and, when the ap proprlate hand comes up, there Is nothing more to do than ap ply simple arithmetic. For example, take this deal where South is In seven no trump and West leads a spade. Declarer starts with twelve sure tricks and Is a strong favorite to make the thirteenth. The only real danger is an unfavorable diamond break, and South'! chief concern, therefore, is to cater to the possible 4-1 dia mond division. In line with this he does not tackle the diamonds at once, but postpones playing them until he learns more about the unseen hands. Declarer starts by cashing four spades and three hearts, discovering In the process that East started with a doubleton in each of those suits (and si multaneously learning that .West started with two five card suits). After then cashing the ace of clubs, he plays the king and ace of diamonds, West showing out on the ace and proving that East started with four diamonds. The count of the hand la how comnlete. East started with im cisely two spades, two hearts, four diamonds, and hanm ftvm clubs (of which he has only one left). Doublechecking this, West started with five spades, five hearts, one diamond, and hence oniy two ciuDs. This knowledge Is important because South might otherwise be tempted now to take a club finesse for his thirteenth trick a move that would be disastrous as well as at variance with the known facts. After cashing the queen of diamonds and discarding a club. South leads a club towards his K-J and confidently plays the king, knowing full well that the king will catch the queen. C AMOf: GOD'S SPOKESMAN FOR JUSTICE International Sunday School Lesson for October 8, 1967 Memory Selection; "The Lord God hath spoken, who can . but prophsey?" (Amos 3:8) Lesson Text: Amos 1:1;7 . As has been pointed out In our previous Lesson, Amos was "the prophet of social righteousness". For, at the time of Amos, the matter of social Justice held priority over all else in the lives of God's people. Every prophet ordained by God will find it necessary to speak up against injustices and oppression where he finds such matters rampant in his day and time. And In this day and time, with dictatorships rampant in this world of : ours which dally grows smaller with the use of fast.flylng . airplanes and speedy cars this can be an oppressive burden. ' The man of God (and those who follow him) dare not be 1 silent; they must face complicated Issues of human dignity and right with boldness; their response must be Christian. activated. Amos whose life was led in solitude, apart from the city dwellers saw much to concern him; for, while ac cepting God as their Divinity, the people of Israel (with very few exceptions) did not llvebyHlsCommandments. How often, In the study of the Scriptures, have we seen God chose from the ranks of the comparatively unlettered simple men to be elevated to the task of spreading the "Word? Such as man was Amos. Perhaps God feels that the lives and conditions of ALL people being Bis main con cern, those who live among them are closest to the vast majority of working people; closest to them, and to the problems which confront them and daily add complications to their lives. If so, any one of us can be called to do God's work on earth! And what a challenge that is! And what a fertile field we have to work In, in His Namel . For God is the Lord of History. And surely history repeats itself, down through the centuries, forming a pat tern. Mankind remains mankind, and in doing so perpetrates over and over again the same mistakes, the same human errors and fallacies. For man Is slow to learn, to profit from the mistakes of others! Mankind has much to learn from the comparatively brief Book of Amos; we can learn the danger of complacency in times of propserlty; the danger of "hardening of the arteries" of our national conscience, when It conflicts with our personal well-being. ;.';. .... ": ...V -itlJy.' "' :-. And, from Amos himself, we can draw an example of courage to speak out and stand up for God, despite al most Inevitable opposition from those with vested in terests, bigoted minds, and self-centered hearts. From Amos we can learn the value of a close relation ship with God, and an inspiring lesson In dedication of a life to the will of God. Certain It Is, that If we make an honest assessment of ourselves as God's prophets we will see the areas wherein we are lacking. But merely seeing our weaknesses Is not enough; If we fall to Improve our potentials for doing - God's work, then we see, but are blind ... we hear, but .are deaf, v 1 The remedy lies within ourselves, and with us alone; 1 no . . . we are not quite alone we have God on our side, I ' strengthening us when we nee strength, bolstering us when " we weaken. We CAM be an Amos In our time! v (These comments are based on outlines of the International Sunday School Lesons, copy ' righted by the International Council of Religious Education, and used by permission).
