This year it alls on the 17th. B 1 uniquely appropriate this year to remember those who serve in the armed services. In the riots.protests, disorders and dissents which nave swept the country In the past year, and tor several years, we sometimes overlook the indispensable con. trlbutlon of those who are serv. lng their country in the services. The nation's security has al ways demanded armed (orces and still does. As long as that's true the profession should be viewed as an honorable one and duty to one's country as an admirable calling. Members of the armed services today serve under several handicaps. The nation has been racked with division over the Vietnam war,the war hasbeen waged under limitations often hard for fighting men to compre hend. Support and enthusiasm of the people for the effort! of the aervlces la not what it was, for example, In World War S-when fighting men knew the nation was solidly behind them. Smoke in your Eyes And Air Sacs Emphysema is a mystlfler. Its cause is uncertain. Its cure is un known as yet. New evidence, however, sup ports the growing suspicion that damage to the blood vessels of the lungs caused by cigarette smoking plays a major role in the development of emphysema. Even one cigarette causes mea sureable changes in pulmonary blood distribution. At the University of Louisville (Kentucky) School of Medicine, Dr; J. Bruce Williams measured several changes inpatients, some with lung disease and some with normal lungs, after one cigarette. One of these changes was a de crease in ventilation of the air sacs, where exchange of gases with the blood takes place. A decreased ability of the air sacs to exchange blood and gases Is a characteristic of em. physema. Destruction of the walls of the air aacs Is one aspect of the disease. According to Dr. Williams, the changes observed In pulmonary blood distribution after only one cigarette were 'In the same direction and type as those found in. patients with chronic bron chitis and emphysema. This ob servation may lend support," he ays, '1o the contention that emphysema is a disease of the pulmonary vasculature Induced by repeated exposure to cigarette smoke". Your TB-RD association makes a year-round effort to combat smoking, emphysema, TB and air pollution. " International Sunday School Lesson for May 18, 1969. MEMORY SELECTION: "Search ths Scriptures; for lnthem ye think ys have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me." (Iohn59) LESSON TEXT: John 8:37-47; 18: 12-15; Acts86-35;17:10 12; James 1:22-25. Our Lesson today latroducss a now unit which Is mainly , concerned with the hows and wherefores of studyinfth Bible. Any of us who are making our living in tho world of In dustry (especially an Industry whose concern la In the realm of marketing) will recognise the old saying: "There's a difference between a salesman and aaorder-taker'l" The difference Is squally applicable to a student of the Bible, and a mere "reader". A student" will study, and learn, and ' question. . .and try to understand; while a reader will merely turn to a passage at random and quicker scan It gaining nothing much from It, but imsrslysjttlsfylng a sense of "duty", .nd aequlrlngaasdssof sto)jseU-satlsfsctlon, And Just as the alive,' vibrant ekfoarpao, believing in his product, accumulates ths orders ana assures himself of a good living, so will ths ar'dent Student ,pf things theological assure himself of riches beyond mere material standards, whereas ths rsadsr fths "order-taker") merely meets ths needs of ths moment and those not too adequately! For the reading of ths Bible ought to be an oasis of ths soul. . . whereby one renews spiritual strength; courage, and con fldencs with which to meet the challenges of temporal life; whereby, in all humility, one caokeep a sense of perspective, and grow as a person one who 1 worthy of ths supreme ' sacrifice of Jesus Christ. ' i i ' Jesus led and taught the disciples. . .always making al lowances for their humanity. Hs knew that It would take Urns for ths full meaning of His ministry to make Itself felt. Hs knew that, by careful teaching methods end planning, they would finally corns to fully understand ths portent of His Ufe. As they grew in grace, so Would they grow In their knowledge of His redemptive purpose regarding mankind. This sams spiritual principle applies to the Christian's understanding of ths Bible. As a child, bora Into ths Christ tan faith, we accept and believe; later, ws believe and ' reason! For our understanding of ths Scriptures is truly a pilgrimage la the deepest sense of the word; Just as we roach levels of tolerance and pain, so we reach levels of un- '" derstandlng. A lack of understanding of ths Scriptures robs us of ths spiritual hslp that Is available to us, Just as the inability to grasp the Importanca of the method of study robs ths College student of ths ability to understand and appreciate , thefourtalnofknowledgethathasbeenmadeavaUable. Perhaps ths purpose of this Lesson Is contained la a 'nutshell In Janes I, mess 22 through 15.. They are both an exhortation andawarnlng.lt Is so easy to bear and dls mlssj It is so much harder dad so much more challonglng) to hear and to heed I . It Is not necessarily true that a man la a devout Christ ian, just because he reads the Bible! One must apply to one's own Ufe what one reads that Is the truly devout Christian.. V- f- "H.;-''v v "s:i Ths study of ths Bible should be-purpossful. It should bs primarily concerned wtth learning.
