Clark, Southern regional manager of tne National Automobile Theft Bureau. The best wav to experience the inconvenience of being stranded without a car, Mr. Clark adds, is to follow a few bad habits, which will endear you to at least one auto thief. When running a brief errand, always leave the keys in the ionition. Even better, leave the engine running so as to speed the setawav of the thief. If vou wish to offer a slight challenge to the thief who enjoys playing games, you can make a practice of "hiding" an extra ignition key under the floormat, seat, hood or other "safe" place. Mr. Clark said that about 40 per cent of all auto thefts last year involved cars with keys left behind by the owners. Such nractices bv auto owners actually serve as encouragement for teenagers to steal vehicles. Another bad habit is keeping your doors and windows unlocked at all times, as was the case in some 80 per cent of all auto thefts in i960. This way. the thief has tne opportunity of practicing his art of crossing wires to start ine car's ignition system. Also, robbers enioy rum maging through unlocked autos in search of stereo tapes, con tents of glove comprtments and other "soodies" that can be easily removed. You can whet the thief's ap petite for the contents of your car bv leaving clothes hanging in view, a camera on the back window ledge, or other valuable items that can be easily seen by anv nassina thief. Further encouragement can be give to a thief by parking your car in a dimly lit area where the known crime rate is high. Leaving the car unattended for long periods of time will help inprnane the confidence ot a nervous thief. When the car is stolen, you can help the criminal by delaying in reporting the theft to the police mtil the culnrit has time to LOANS TO FARMERS For purchase of cars, trucks, tractors, combincis, any kind of machinery. Forget your license plate -number, serial number and other pertinent Information, since this information may assist tne police: in solving the ease. - Of course, there are those who ' do not wish to cooperate with auto - thieves. They realize tnat ineir : bad habits that' encourage auto thieves can ruin a teenager's life, since the police eventually catch a large percentage of' the criminals. Also, it does not pay to have vour auto stolen, since about 20 per cent of the stolen cars are never recovered. Those stolen cars that are recovered require an average of about $200 to replace parts taken in stripping and to repair damage resulting from requent accidents by auto thieves. The NATB, an insurance in dustry organizatiin, is still tallying the count, but it appears from early estimates that a new record of over one million cars were stolen throughouUhe nation in 1969. You can help prevent auto thieves from setting a new record in 1970 - and you can avoid the inconvenience and expense of beina left walking by a thief - by making it a habit to lock your car and pocket the key.
