McGee hu been named provoet of the Frederick Ctmpui of Tidewater Com- munity College. He assumed his new position on March 28. Each of the four campuses of Tidewater Community College will have a provost who is acting head of his particular campus. Dr. Douglas M. Montgomery is the president of the four-campus complex. Dr. McGee has been serving as higher education program of ficer with the U. S. Office of Education, Department of Health, Education & Welfare, in the Charlottesville office since 1965. He served as assistant dean and later a director of ad missions and registration at Old Perquimans Pupils To Participate In Land Judging Meet Perquimans County High V School will be represented at the 16th Annual Nortn Carolina Future Farmers of America Land Judging Meet on Saturday, April II, at Chatham Central High School in Goldston. Fifty teams of four members each will be competing for a first place team to represent the state at the International Land, Pasture, and Range Judging Meet in Oklahoma City. The winning team and its instructor will receive a plague and $750 for expenses at the national contest The second place team will receive $100 for expenses to a state FFA camp this summer. Both first and second place teams will be awarded chapter plagues. Team members representing the local chapter include: Julian I Hurdle. C. L. Goddfrev. Local Talent Seen In "Paul Green's Carolina" The College of theAlbemarle Satyrs will present "Paul Green's Carolina" at the Perquimans High School in Hertford on Friday, April 17 at 8 p.m. Three Perquimans residents are among those taking , part In this attraction which is sponsored by the Perquimans County Arts Council. Kim Rose, graduate of Perquimans High will play one of the folk guitars which provided soft background music to set the mood for the readings, both sad . and humorous, which show Paul Green as a writer of short stories dealing with everyday, com monplace happenings. Elton Hollowell, graduate of Perquimans Union is also one of the performers, and Lee Fuller, sixth grade teacher a Perquimans Union, has acted as consultant to Lucy Vaughn who dapted and directed the stories to be presented by the Satyrs'. ; Lucy Vaughn is assistant professor of English at the College of the Albemarle and brings to it a wealth of ex perience and training. She was graduated from the University of Houston, cum laude, as a drama major, and later received the Maiter of Arts desree from Kent 'state University. Mrs. Vaughn is i singer and actress as well as a teachenand she is able, there fore, to understand the aims and aspirations of these young people whom she directs in theatrical Provost Dominion University from 1963 until 1965. McGee attended public schools in Portsmouth, graduating from Cradock High School in 1955. He received a bachelor of science degree in history and education from Old Domion University. His graduate work was done at the University of Virginia in the field of guidance counselor, education and a doctorate in educaton. McGee specialized in the field of access to higher education. He is the author of a book, "An Analysis of the Impact of Federally Supported Student Financial Aid Program in In stitutions of Higher Eduation in the State of West Virginia". " He is married to the former Mary Frances Eure, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Delvin H. Eure. The couple has two children. Mr. McGee is a past president of the Virginia Association of College Registrars and Ad missions Officer currently serves as vice president of the Virginia Personnel and Guidance Association. April 5-11 Is National FHA Week March 20, the Perquimans County High School Future Homemakers of America Chapter met in the high school auditorium. The devotion was given by Kathy Keel and Peggy Griffen. The committee chosen for selecting the FHA'er of the month is proud to present this honor to Nancy Riddick, historian for the club. Anita Smith, Linda Harrell, Lydia Stallings and Janice Layden, have been selected to head the project committee, which plans to plant flowers in the sign in front of the building. April 5-11 will mark National FHA week. Any member wishing to attend the national FHA convention in Raleigh on April 4, is asked to sign up in the Home Economics room. President Margaret Mansfield expressed her wish to observe National FHA week. A committee was selected to plan a bulletin board for the occasion. Those on the committee are Kathy Keel, Darlene Meads, Willie Faye Dail, and Nancy Davenport. The highlight for the meeting was the skit entitled "Right or Wrong Etiquette' For the Dan ce." This skit ' presented by fellow members was enjoyed by all. productions. Paul Green is best known in this area for his symphonic drama "The Lost Colony" but he also has to his credit "The Common Glory" at William sburg, "The Stephen Foster Story" at Bards town, Kentucky, "Cross and Sword" at St. Augustine, Florida, and "Texas" at Canyon, Texas. He well deserves the title of "Father of the Symphonic Drama" in which he has achieved a union of all the performing arts. His work has spread over nearly a half cen tury, and he has written many beautiful and moving works, many reminiscent of his boyhood days on a tobacco and cotton farm in Harnett County. His outstanding talents were recognized by the award of the Pulitzer Prize for his full-length play, "In Abraham's Bosom." The first event in the Perquimans County Arts Council's presentation of the arts was an exhibit of paintings by Jaquelin Jenkins of Elizabeth City, displayed at the Perquimans County Library. Following that the Council assisted the Perquimans High School in getting a performance of Shakespeare's "As You Like It". ( ' The readings by the Satyrs of "Paul Green's Carolina" will be the third in the series and this will be followed by other events including an arts and crafts show on June 12 and 13. Meet Your Perquimans Marching Unit 7Us J ' J ! t -J .i I KJLilJ NANCY REED The three girls from the Perq. Co. Marching Unit being featured this week are all of ficers of the unit. Miss Nancy Reed is the 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Durwood Reed, Jr. She is secretary and treasurer of the unit. Nancy is a 5 feet 4 in. senior with dark brown hair and brown eyes. Her hobbies are reading, sewing and swimming. During her 4 years at Perq. High School she has been a member of the Health Club. FHA, and majorette in the Marching Unit each year. She was home room Vice-President in the 9th grade, home room Chairman R.L. Spivey To Be On Tri-County Board R. L. Spivey, Chairman of the Board of Perquimans County Commissioners, was appointed Monday to serve as a temporary member of the Tri-County Jail Committee. Thev.Coun.ties of Pasquotank, Perquimans and Camden under the authority of Section 153-53.7 of the General Statutes of North Carolina join and associate together and agree to construct, finance and operate a district confinement facility or jail. The cost of construction, operation, maintenance and administration of said Tri- County facility or jail shall be divided among the respective counties in the proportion that the population of each County as figured by the latest U. S. Census. figure, bears to the total population of the three counties. Each County Board shall temporarily elect one of its members which shall constitute an administrative Board for the operation of said facility. The said Board shall have and is given authority to execute contracts in the name of the respective Counties for the construction of a facility con templated by this resolution. The property on which the Mrs. Ward Rites Held Thursday Funeral services for Mrs. Bessie Overman Ward, 75, of Winfall, who died Tuesday night, were held Thursday at 4 :00 in the Chapel of the Swindell Funeral Home by the Rev. W. R. Pinner, pastor of the Epworth Methodist Church. "In Times Like These" was sung by the Epworth Choir. Mrs. Walter Nowell was organist. The casket pall was made of pink carnations, white chrysanthemums, and baby's breath and was centered with pink roses and orchids. Pallbearers were David Trueblood, Durward Barber, Jr., Joseph Barber, Dillard Ward, Claude Williams and Dennis Chalk."... ' Burial was in Cedarwood Cemetery. '-..! Her activities include being a Majorette in the Marching Unit for 2 years, a member of the Health Club, and a JV CheerLeader in the 9th grade. Her hobbies are animals and drawing. The County Accountant was authorized to use the County Lock Box in Peoples Bank and Trust Co. Reports were heard from the Agricultural Extension and Welfare Departments. The Board voted to amend the County Fire Department Budget in the amount of $250.00; the Sheriff's Department to be amended in the amount of $300.00 ($110.00 of which is a refund from Albemarle Law and Order. Association); and the County Prisoner Budget in the amount of $900.00. She is a 17-year-old Senior at Perq. High School, 5 feet 6 in. tall with reddish brown hair and blue eyes. Her hobbies include working in the hospital, music, and going to the beach. Gayle is the 1968-70 Home Coming Queen. She has been a Majorette in the Marching Unit for the past 4 years, Health dub Treasurer, FHA, and a member of the cast of the Senior play. Her future plans are to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro to study nursing. Dixie Bunch Dies After Long Illness Dixie Harrell Bunch, 67 died Saturday in a Goldsboro hospital after an extended illness. She was a native of Chowan county, the daughter of the late Isaac B. and Lena Harrell. She was a member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Clarence Bunch; six sons, Ralph Bunch, Hill, Lindsey Alvin. Carlton, Edward, and Thurrell Bunch all of Edenton; one daughter, Mrs. Carolyn Roger son, Winfall; one brother, Lester Harrell, Edenton; three sisters all of Edenton, Mrs. Lean Ed wards, Mrs. Agnes Harrell, Mrs. Pencie Bond and 15 grandchildren. The body was taken to Williford Funeral Home. Funeral arrangements are in complete. Mrs. Jessups Sister Dies At Kenly, N. C. Mrs. Frank Jessup has returned from Kenly, N. C, where she spent several days and attended the funeral of her sister Mrs. George Standi, 44. Saturday to compete In the state. eontaat. Floyd Mathews, Chairman of the Perquimans Soil and Water Conservation District Super visors, presented a check of $50 to the team on Tuesday of this week during class : at the Perquimans County High School where these boys are members of the Junior class. , Mr. Mathews states this Wood Finishing Meeting In County Office Bldg. Apr. 13 What causes wood deterioration in houses? The answer to this question and many fathers will be given by Stephen Hanover, North Carolina State University Wood Products Specialist from Raleigh. You are Unvited to a Wood and Wood Finishes Meeting on April 13, 1970, 7:30 p.m. at the County Office Building in Hertford. Mr. Hanover will discuss, (1) wood products specifications including plywood, particle-board, lumber and treated products, (2) wood Ideterioration in houses caused by pmgl, their identification and Icontrol and the finishing of in terior woodworks. He will hold a workshop on April 14, at 9:00 a.m. on the finishing of interior woods. Each participant will have an op portunity to mix and match stains and try out a variety of finishes. If you have questions about this very informative class, please call Ila Grey White, Home Economics Extension Agent, at the County Office Building. She says 41 of all homes in Perquimans County are not sound, 22 are deteriorating and 19are dilapidated. It is time we had a look at some of the reasons why homes deteriorate." Stafford Appointed Construction Inspector For FHA Jacob. A. Stafford of Route 5, Elizabeth City, has been ap pointed as a Construction In spector for the Farmers Home Administration with headquarters at Hertford, North Carolina according' to an an nouncement made by James T. Johnson, State FHA Director. Mr. Johnson stated that Construction Inspector positions have recently been authorized to assist with the agency s accelerated Rural Housing Program whereby loans are made for the construction, purchase or repair of homes in rural areas. Construction In spectors are being employed to make inspections during con struction, assist families in planning for new homes, repairing existing homes, advise borrowers on construction problems, recommend con struction changes and maintain a close liaison with builders and contractors in the area." Mr. Stafford will perform inspection work in Perquimans, Chowan, Pasquotank, Camden, Currituck, Hertford and Gates Counties. Youth Week Observed At Hertford Baptist Church April 5 through 12 has been set aside as Youth Week at the Hertford Baptist Church. Youth week provides the youth of the church with the opportunity of learning about the respon sibilities of church membership through the experience of ser ving in the capacity of church officers. The. highlight of the week will be on Friday evening, Saturday evening and Sunday morning of this week at which time a Youth Team from Campbell College will conduct Revival services on Friday evening at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday morning at the 11:00 a.m. Worship. Following the Friday! evening Service there will be a fellowship for the youth in the Fellowship Hall. On Saturday at 6:30 p.m. there will be a banquet for the youth of the church who are in the Intermediate and Young People's Department. The Youth Team from Camp bell College is composed of Steve Pickard, a Junior from Norfolk, Va. who will be the speaker, Tom Creech, a Senior, from Charlotte, N. C. will serve as Music Director; Nancy Lewis, a Junior from Suffolk, Va. will serve as Pianist; and Marion Reid, a Senior from Lenoir, N, C, President of the Baptist Student Union at Campbell ; and Ted Mansion, a Freshman, who will lead in discussion and folk worship following the banquet on Saturday evening. On Sunday, April 12th the Youth of the church will assume the responsibilities of all the church officers; and on Sunday evening John O. White IV, Youth Pastor, will speak at the Evening Worship Service at 7:30 p.m. Both youth and adults are invited to attend these services.
