Mrs. Bachelor Dies InTarboro Wordhas been received here of the death of a former resident, Mrs. W. H. Bachelor of Tarboro, Mrs, Bachelor died last Thursday morning. Funeral services were held Saturday morning at 11 o'clock at the Caryle Funeral Home in Tar boro. Both the late Mr. and Mrs. Bachelor lived in Hertford until his retirement in 1966 as a machinist with the N. C. High way Commission. Following Mr. Bachelor's death in January of 1968, Mrs. Bachelor moved to Tarboro where she was living at the time of her death. Rites Held For Cdr. Fletcher Funeral services for Ret. USN Commander John Stewart Fletcher who died Monday mornina in the Portsmouth Naval Hospitalfollowing a 10 day illness, were held Thursday at 3:00 in Holy Trinity Episcopal uiurcn Dy me nev. cawin Williams. The casket pall was made of white chrysanthemums, white carnations and fern. Pallbearers were John S. Fletcher, 2nd, David Fletcher, James Fletcher, Frank Williams, Ben Wood and George Wood. Burial was in the Holy Trinity Church Cemetery. Wallace Barrow Dies In Wilson L. Wallace Barrow, 73, died Saturday in Wilson. A native of Perquimans County, he lived in Hertford prior to moving to Wilson. His parents were the late ueorge waiiace ana MTS. CUB M. Barrow He was employed by Co. prior to Pitt his. Hardware retirement. Surviving are a sister, Mrs. Lloyd Hinson of Wilson. Sur viving is a sister, Mrs. Lloyd Hinson of Wilson. A funeral service was held Monday at 11 :00 in the Shingleton Funeral Home in Wilson by the Rev. Frank .Tyburn. Graveside services were held at 3:00 in Cedarwood Cemetery in Hertford by the Rev. Ryburn and the Rev. Norman Harris. The casket was draped with the American Flag. Pallbearers were Vivian Darden, Willie Ainsley, J. W. Dillon, Marion Riddick, W. E. Nelson and Jimmy E. Stallings. Jennings Named To Chapel Hill Fraternity A record of 142 students at the University of North Carolina here were initiated into Phi Beta Kappa, the nation's highest scholastic honorary fraternity, in special ceremonies Tuesday. Ronald Marce Jennings of Hertford was among the 142 students named. The initiation was held in the Institute of Government Auditorium and a banquet followed at the Ranch House. Dr. Almonte C. Howell, professor of English emeritus and advisor to foreign students before his retirement two years ago, ad dressed the group. Professor Claude S. George Jr., associate dean of the School of Business Administration, is faculty ad visor for Phi Beta Kappa. Ronald M. Jennings is a senior psychology , major at the University. Karen is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Keith Haskett of 205 Woodland Circle, Hertford. Wayne is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Marion Riddick of Route 1, Hertford. In addition to these two students, there were thirteen other students making the Grand Honor Roll. Mrs. Geneva Sawyer was re elected president of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 126 at the regular meeting of the Auxiliary held May 7. Mrs. Sawyer and the other new of ficers elected will be installed at the June meeting. President Geneva Sawyer presided at the meeting using the regular ceremony. Mrs. Elizabeth Haskett chaplain gave the devotional. Reports were made by officers and Chairmen of Committees. It was voted to get a new secretary book, a scrapbook, and a History book. Mrs. Ruth Powell gave a brief summary of the history for this year. Plans for Poppy Day, Saturday May 23rd, were made including a schedule of those on duty for the day in front of the Courthouse. ( t?: I !5 J i l ' J l ; sgr ' V 1 1 in Frank winsiow Accepts Position With FCX Frank Cale Winsiow, a recent graduate of North Carolina State University, has been employed as a manager-trainee at the Raleigh FCX Service, according to A.J. Haynes, general manager of FCX, Inc., a Raleigh-based regional farmers cooperative covering the two Carolinas. A native of Hertford, Winsiow graduated from Perquimans High School. He earned a B.S. degree in Agricultural Business and Crop Science from N.C. State in January of 1970. While at the university, Winsiow was active in student affairs. He was a member of the Agronomy Club and served as its treasurer and president. He also served as chairman of the Agronomy Club fair bootn exhibits and represented the club in a speech contest sponsored by the American Society of Agronomy in Detroit last fall. He was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha social fraternity. Winsiow worked two summers at the Union Carbide research farm near Clayton while in college. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Howard W. Winsiow of Route 2, Hertford. He is married to the former Miss Judy Kennedy, and they presently reside on Powell Drive In Raleigh. Ray White, Perquimans County Dog Warden and Rabies Inspector will begin vac cinating dogs on Saturday May 16 and continue thru June 6. The clinic will be held at Joe & Bill's Service Station, located across from the Towe Motor Company in Hertford, on Dobb St. It will not be held throughout the county as has been the procedure in the past. Just the one location this year and that is Joe & Bill's Service Station, Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 8 A.M. til 6:00 p.m. MISS BRENDA BANKS is the daughter of Mrs. Charles Clifford Banks and the late Mr. Banks. She is 16 years old and a sophomore at Perq. High School. She is 5 feet 2 in. tall, has brown hair, and brown eyes. Her hobby is reading. Brenda is a Majorette in the Marching Unit. Women's Softball League Launches New Season; Profits Send Girls To Camp A 3 f5 Mrs. Betty Hurdle League Chairman and Mrs. Linda Perry who helps coach The Little Girls Softball League is shown presenting Linda Spruill daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Spruill and Connie Arnold daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Arnold, Certificates to attend The Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center. The Women's Softball League was organized three years ago by Mi s. Betty Hurdle and Allen Winsiow. The Women's Softball League opened this season by meeting at the home of Mrs. Betty Hurdle on April 3rd. Last year the Club decided to use any profits to send a local girl to camp this summer. Through donations from merchants and interested individuals there were enough profits left to send one girl to camp. The club members have decided to donate 3 dollars each thus allowing two girls to go this year. The Club was asked by managers of the Elizabeth City Softball League to join their League this year, but turned down the opportunity to continue with their project of using their funds to help the girls of our community attend summer camps. From a list of 15 deserving girls - Linda Spruill and Connie Arnold were chosen by lucky draw. Linda, a 7th giader at Hertford Grammar School is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Spruill and Connie, who attends Central Grammar School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charlie Arnold. The two girls will journey to Reidsville, N. C. to participate in camping activities at the Betsy-Jeff Penn 4-H Center for a week in August. . The Club having obtained a coach and an umpire is an ticipating its best year yet. Mr. Tommy Cox will serve as coach and Mr. Richard Lee, a newcomer to Hertford, has consented to umpire home .games. Women who have signed with the league so far are as follows: Kitty Brown, Cecil Burton, Jane Cherry, Elaine Cox, Betty Hurdle, Linda Perry, Doggie Pierce, Dickie White, Barbara Nixon, Barbara White, Sally Halsey, Lois Jean Lane, Nellie Summer, Susan Cox and Moussri Bateman. Jeryl Zachary Wins Scholarship Miss Jeryl Zachary, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Shelton C Zachary of Hertford, was recently the receipient of a $1,400.00 scholarship. The scholarship was awarded by Livingstone College, Salisbury, N.C. A candidate for graduation at Perquimans High School, sh will major in socialogy and music. ; Miss Zacharv is active in her school, church, and community. Having spent her four years of high school at Perquimans Hign she has been a member of the Glee Club four years. As a member of St. Paul A. ME. Zion Church Miss Zachary is a member of the Sunday School where she serves as secretary. She is president of the Youth Fellowship, president of the youth choir.
