Academy, was extended an in

Competitive Honor Scholarships
Examination at Chowan College,
' Murfreesboro, as a result of his
high grades. He accepted the
- Invitation and was recently in
formed that he was the winner of
a $500.00 Scholarship.
; Andy plans to attend Chowan
for two years and then transfer to
N. C. State University, Raleigh.
He is the son of Mr. and Mrs.

Winslow, Ward 67, died Tuesday
at 1:15 p.m. in the Chowan
Hospital following a long illness.
A native of Perquimans Co. she
was the widow of Joseph Parker
Ward and the daughter of the
late George Watson and Mrs.
Rosa Thach Chappell.
She was a member of the First
United Methodist Church where
she was a former Sunday School
teacher and was a member of the
Bethel Home Demonstration
tlub.
Surviving are three daughters,
Mrs. Roselyn Thach Gray of Salt
Lake City, Utah, Mrs. Joyce
Hobbs of Route 1 and Mrs. Sarah
Frosland of Hertford; two sons,
J. Lawrence Winslow of Winfall
and Benjamin Lanier Winslow of
Salt Lake City, Utah; a stepson,
Hallet Ward of Elizabeth City; a
brother, L. D. Chappell of
Hertford; a sister, Mrs. Mabel
Orr of Robbinsville, N.C.; a half
brother, Bruce Chappell; two
half sisters, Mrs. Betty Ruth
Lumpkin of Atlanta and Mrs.
Margaret Copeland of Hertford;
her step-mother, Mrs. Ruth

Nurses Assistants
Course To Be
Held In Hertford
A Nurses Assistants Course is
being offered by the Adult
Education Division of College of
The Albemarle, in Hertford at
the Municipal Building on Grubb
Street, beginning June 15 from 7
to 10 p.m. three nights a week for
total of 30 hours.
There is a desperate need in
our local hospitals for more
Nurse Assistants and this course
is an attempt to teach people in a
program of this nature to take
care of the needs of our hospitals.
The course will be instructed
by Mrs. Lizzie Lee Cox. Anyone
interested In taking this course

Study for children and youth
from 3 years through 16 years of
age.
The picture above includes

The Bible School's Com
mencement Exercises were held
Sunday Evening June 7th and
were well-attended by parents
and adult friends who thoroughly
enjoyed the children's time of
sharing some of the things which
they learned and did during the
week.

the Wednesday session of
Perquimans County District
(Court and disposed of the
following cases:
. William E. Stallings, charged
with assault with a deadly
weapon, was given a sentence of
90 days, which was suspended
upon payment of a fine of $100.00 .
and costs of court;
William Henry Hendrix was
sound guilty of two charges,
failure to comply with Inspection
Law and being drunk on the
streets of Hertford, and was
taxed with costs on the first
Icharge and given a fine of $10.00
and costs on the second charge;
Kerby Knight received a fine of
$10.00 and costs on a charge of
being drunk; '
Russell Gilliam, charged with
assault and public drunkenness,
was given a sentence of 30 days,
which was suspended upon
payment of a fine of $25.00 and
costs and the further condition
not to go on premises of the
defendant.

Sunday, June 14 at the Preston
Nixon Farm, located 1 mile west
of Hertford at 2 p.m.
Events include - Halter for
Ponies and Horses; Childrens
and Youth speed and pleasure;
Roaster Ponies; Barrel Racing;
Mens and ladies Pleasure
events.
The 4-H Club will be in charge
of the concession stand.
No gate charge will be asked,
but a small fee for riders is
required.

J. A. Carver, Sr.
Dies After Long
Illness
Mr. James Arba Carver, Sr.,
74. of Route 1, Belvidere died
Saturday at 6:30 p.m. in the
Albemarle Hospital following a
long illness. A native of
Perquimans County he was a
retired farmer and a son of the
late Daniel Andrew and Mrs.
Martha Rountree Carver.
A member of the Bethany
Methodist Church, he was also
an Army Veteran of World War I
and a member of the American
Legion Post 126.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs.
Sallie Riddick Carver; two sons,
James Arba Carver, Jr. of
Chesapeake, Va. and D. A.
Carver of Norfolk, Va.; one
daughter, Mrs. Velma Ann
Cartwright of Virginia Beach,
Va.; one brother, George Carver
of Belvidere, N. C; one sister,
Mrs. Mary Gregory of Hobb
sville, N. C; and 7 grand
children. A funeral service was held
Tuesday at 3:00 in the Chapel of
the Swindell Funeral Home by
the Rev. Daniel Forbes. Burial
was in Westlawn Cemetery,
Elizabeth City.
"Rock of Ages" and "The Old
Rugged Cross" were played
during the service by Mrs.
Chester Winslow, organist.
The casket was draped with
the American Flag.
The casket pall was made oi
white chrysanthemums, white
carnations, red carnations,
baby's breath and fern.

Johnnie Stallings Jasper
Winslow, Rollo White and Aleck
Stallings.

The Board of Perquimans
County Commissioners went on
record Monday endorsing the
Interstate Freeway, which will
pass through some of the nor
theastern counties of North
Carolina.
A tentative budget for fiscal
year - 1970-1971, as prepared by
the County Accountant, was
adopted by the Board and the
tentative tax rate was set at $1.65
per $100.00 assessed value.
The Board voted to accept
sealed bids for fuel oil to be used
by County Agencies for fiscal
year 1970-1971. Bids are to be
submitted on or before 10 a.m.
Tuesday, July 7, 1970. The Board
reserves the right to reject any
and all bids.
A refund of $31.68 for double
listing of personal property was
authorized to be given to Rollo P.
White.
The Board approved a petition
requesting the N.C. State High
way Commission to add ap
proximately one-half of road to
State maintained Secondary
Road System leading from S.R.
1328 to Deep Creek in New Hope
Township.
Hilton M. White was reap
poined to serve as Veterans
Service Officer effective May 1,
1970 to July 1, 1971.
Motion was made and
seconded authorizing the
amendment of the Sheriff's
Budget in the amount of $550.00;
the Board of Elections, $1,263.00;
and the Prisoners' Budget,
$200.00.
Motion was made by Riley S.
Monds, Jr., Board member,
seconded by Thomas D. Nixon
and the Resolution was adopted
by the Board to enter Agreement
for N.C. Local Governmental
Employes Retirement System to
provide employe death benefits
for Social Service Employes.
C.T. Skinner, Jr. was ap
pointed by the Board to serve as
Fire Marshal of Perquimans
County effective June 1, 1970 to
July 1, 1971. The purpose of the
job is to make inspections and
reports of all public buildings,
facilities, schools and rest homes
and to coordinate all fire
prevention activities.
The Board voted to donate
$500.00 to each of the following
Fire Departments: Inter-County
Fire Dept. at Woodvllle, Bethel
Community Fire Protection
Assoc., Town of Winfall, and
Town of Hertford, to be used for
fire fighting operating equipment.'.'

The Perquimans County
Library is now operating on its
summer schedule. It is open until
5 o'clock in the afternoon except
on Saturday when it is closed in
the afternoon. The summer
hours are-posted on the library
door.
Four memorial books have
been given to the library this
week. Vacationland USA, a
National Geographic
publication; New International
Encyclopedia of Art, Vol.
Eleven; and Young Designs for
Living, a book of home
decorating ideas, all three are in .
memory of Frances Newby. The

Post 126 American Legion will
hold its annual fish fry on the
courthouse lawn Saturday, June
