" Mrs. White tendered her resignation in June and will continue her duties with th the Extension Service until July 31. She has been employed by the county for 12 years, having served as Assistant Home Agent for 2 years prior to accepting the position of Home Agent in 1960. . She is a native of New Bern and following her graduation from high school there, she entered the University of North Carolina, Greensboro, where she received a B.S. Degree in Home Economics in 1958. She is a member of Epsilon Sigma Phi Sorority, an honorary society for Home Economics Extension Agents, a member of the American Home Economists Association, the North Carolina Home Economists Association, Past President of the Eastern, District Home Economists Association, and has served on numerous committees on the L State and National level through 1 the years, including chair manship of the State Meeting. She came to Hertford in June of 1958 and assumed the role of Perquimans County Tax Rate Is '1.65 The Board of Perquimans County Commissioners set the Tax Rate for the new year at $1.65 per $100.00 valuation for Real and Personal property. Plans Training Conference the Albemarle Firemen's Association will sponsor a training conference on Motorized Transportation Emergencies In Hertford on July 23, WJQ. Assistant Home Economics Extension Agent working mainly with youth and 4-H programs During her years as Home Agent, she has worked with Homemakers of the county in areas of Food, Nutrition, Clothing, Family Relations, Home Management, Home Industries, Housing and House Furnishings, She is quite in terested in promoting better housing for people in Perquimans County, and in the fall she plans to hold an Interior Decorating Series. In her work she has helped the people of the county in special interest programs, workshops, demonstrations, and various other programs. She has served as advisor to Home uemon stration Clubs giving directions and teaching leadership. "I have tried to disseminate and distribute homemaking information from the University of North Carolina to the residents of Perquimans County. I believe in the purpose of the Extension Service and its philosophy 'Help People To Help Them selves'," states Mrs. White. She is married to William A. White and they reside with their two children on Whedbee Drive m Hertford. Elizabeth City. A Resolution was adopted which requests North Carolina to designate the 10 counties (Perquimans, Chowan, Pasquotank, Gates, Camden, Currituck, Dare, Tyrrell, Washington and Hyde) as an Economic Development District Motion was approved for the payment of $150.00 to the office of District Solicitor of Superior Court for assistance in defraying the expense of each Criminal Session of Superior Court. Payments will begin in 1971. 1971. , . - v In other matters of business, the bid for autocar truck tanker presented by the Belvidere Chapel Hill Fire Department was accepted. The Board accepted the bid presented by Winslow Oil Co. to furnish fuel oil for all of the county agencies In 1970-71. Completes Basic Training Airman Jackie Carroll Win bourne, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles F. Winbourne, of Woodland Circle, Hertford has completed basic training at Latkland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. Airman Winbourne has been assigned to Williams Air Force Base, Phoenix. Arizona for advanced training. He com pleted his High School education at the College of the Albemarle. i I f , tf, Taylor Feted For 21 Years Of Service An appreciation service for Mrs. M. B. Taylor was given at First Baptist Church, Hertford, N.C. on July 5, at 8 p.m. for 21 years of continued service to Perquimans County as Home Economics Extension Agent. For the occasion, Mrs. Taylor wore a yellow brocade dress of Polyester and Dacron with matching accessories. Her corsage of yellow mums was presented to her by Mr. W. F. Ainsley. manager of Gregory's Variety Store in Hertford. Rev. J. H. London was host pastor, and Miss W. T. Riddick presided. Mrs. Hattie Williamston led the devotions and Mrs. E. L. Perry performed at the piano. Tributes were made by representatives of St. Paul A.M.E.'Zion Church, First Baptist Church, Extension Homemakers County Council, Community Workers Club, Senior Citizens Organization. County 4-H Leader Mr. G. W. James, and friends. Mrs. Taylor was presented a beautiful boquet of pink Gladiolas and fern. Other presentations were received from. St. Paul A.M.E. Zion Church, Rev. J. H. London, Ex pastor Rev. Walker, People Bank & Trust Co., Ex Mayor Mr. V. N. Darden, Mr. W. F. Ainsley, Extension Homemakers County Clubs, Senior Citizens Organiza tion, and friends. After the service, a reception was given in Mrs. Taylor's honor at her home on Dobbs St. where all enjoyed a delicious repast and watched her open her many gifts and donations given her by her friends and well-wishers, after which she made timely remarks, thanking her friends and co workers for the fine tribute payed her. Local School Administrator To Attend Seminar James P. Harrell of 901 Grubb St., Hertford, is one of 25 school administrators who will attend the In-Service Education Training Seminar July 20-Aug. 7 at the University of North Carolina. Harrell is regional- director of in-service education in the Edenton-Chowan Schools in Edenton. The in-service seminar provides three weeks of con centrated study for directors of local in-service education training programs for teachers Administrators are invited to attend and receive graduate credit for participation. In-service training is designed to permit teachers to renew teaching certificates within the local school system without returning to summer school for refresher courses. ' Sponsored by UNC and the State Department of Public Instruction, the seminar is directed by Dr. Lester B. Ball, professor of education at UNC. Dr. James A. Valsame of the Department of Public In struction and Dr. John Goode of the State Department will assist in the seminar. Revival Services Piney Woods Friends Church In Belvidere will hold revival services beginning Sunday night. July 19. through Friday night. July 24. at 8 p.m. each night. Rev. Town of Hertford Entered In Governor's A Ward Plan Tom Brown, Director of the Industrial Development Com mission in Perquimans County announced today that the Town of Hertford has been entered in the Governor's Award Program. This program, recently an nounced by Governor Scott, is designed to be of assistance to the smaller communities in North Carolina in their industrial development efforts. It is based on the achievement of various goals, which when reached, will place the community in a better competitive position for the attraction of industry and for general economic growth. It is a program that - has been established to help those com munities in North Carolina that need assistance most - the small towns. In order to qualify as a "Governor's Award Com munity" a town must have a chartered Development Cor poration, an industrial promotion organization, an up-to-date community audit, a specified number of industrial sites, some form of up-to-date promotional literature, and an organized cleanup-fixup cam paign. Director Brown points out L. Wayne Owens Completes Studies At School Lloyd Wayne Owens, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd McCoy Owens of Hertford, North Carolina, completed his studies today at the Apprentice School of the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, a subsidiary of Tenneco Inc. He will continue his work as an ATOMIC POWER DESIGNER in the Virginia Shipyard. Owens entered the school in July, 1965, after graduating from Perquimans High School. During his apprenticeship he won Honorable Mention for Broad A in 1966; was Dormitory Chairman in 1966. During its 50 years of operation, the Newport News Shipyard's Apprentice School has graduated more than 2,700 skilled workmen in 25 crafts. Vocational Training and academic instruction equivalent to a junior college education are provided during the four- and five-year courses offered by the school. The program also in cludes, athletics and other ex tracurricular activities. The Newport News Ship building and Dry Dock Company is the world's largest and most fully integrated Shipyard. Social security benefits paid toj residents of Perquimans County totaled $90,000 a month as 1969 ended Robert W. Alford. social security manager, reported today. .' . ' A benefit increase, signed into law by President Nixon on December 30. 1969. has since raised the monthly rate of payment by 15 per cent for the 403 social security beneficiaries in Perquimans County. Mr. Alford noted. Of the social security beneficiaries living in Perquimans County, 903 are retired workers and their dependents. Another 348 are that Perquimans County already has many of these things as a result of past efforts, and he indicates that he feels that Hertford can qualify with very little-additional effort. As soon as work can be completed on the Hertford application. Brown plans to submit an application for the Town of Winfall, with the hope that both of them will be designated Award Communities. "The important thing." said Brown, "Is that a Governor's Award Community will be recognized on the state level as a community that is better prepared for industrial and economic growth." This was certainly evidenced by the several hun dred people who toured the home of Mr. and Mrs. Curtis Lightfoot, Route 2, Hertford on Sunday, July 12. Families could see what a low cost housing loan would include and find out how such loans can be obtained. The Perquimans County Extension Service and Farmers Home Administration and Albemarle Electric Membership Corp. cooperated in giving families an opportunity to see and hear about availability of resources in housing. Richard Bryant, Perquimans County Extension Chairman, remarked that "we need several thousand houses like this in the county". He encouraged families to consider making their homes better places to live. Lester Simpson. Perquimans receiving benefits as the sur vivors of workers who have died, and 152 are getting benefits as disabled workers or the dependents of disabled workers. Mr. Alford pointed out that although the majority of social security beneficiaries are older people, about one out of every four is under age 60. A number are the children of retired, disabled, or deceased workers who became disabled before they reached 18 and who will probably never be able to go to work and become self sup porting. Revival Meeting At Berea Church Of Christ A Revival meeting will be held at the Berea Church of Christ near Hertford beginning June 20th and lasting thru June 26th. The time will be at 8:00 p.m. Raymond Bennett, a dynamic evangelist from Seaford, Delaware, will be the speaker. Berea's minister Thomas Biggs, will be in charge. If you wish to bring singing groups with you it will be welcomed. $5,697.45 Sales Tax Collected For June Local 1 Sales and Use Tax collected in Perquimans County for the month of June, as reported by the State Depart ment of Revenue, amounted to $5,697.45. County Commissioner praised the efforts of the various agencies in the county to im prove housing. Chamber of Commerce President, Joe No well, Jr. said he was proud of the participation by the people involved. "We need homes like this to maintain a decent standard of living that will keep our young people here". Melvin Howell, Farmers Home Administration, said they would be happy to talk with any family, that loans are available to almost anyone who had a good work record and good credit rating. He announced that lots are available for homes in the county. Under a 1967 change in the law, disability benefits can be paid to a person who becomes disabled for work even if he has less than five years of work under social security. As little as a year and a half is required in the case of a worker who becomes disabled before age 24. Jim Hunter Is Selected On All-Star Squad JIM "CATFISH" HUNTER of the Oakland Athletics has been selected as one of the pitchers for the American League All-Star Squad. He was selected by Earl Weaver of the Baltimore Orioles, who will manage the American League stars. This is the second time Jimmy has been selected. When he was chosen, his record was 13 wins and, 5 losses. To this date, this is the best season he has had since becoming a big leaguer right out of Perquimans High. Perq. District Judge N. E. Aydlett' presided over the Wednesday session of Perquimans County District Court and disposed of the following cases: John Henry White was tried on two charges - possession of tax paid whiskey for resale and possession of tax paid beer for SP4 W. Roberson Awarded Purple Heart, Bronze Star SP4 WILLIAM ROBER SON Is spending some time home on a leave from Valley Forge General Hospital. On April 22, he was wounded in action In Viet Nam. Roberson has been awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for heroism. He is the son of Mrs. Elmer Roberson, and the late Mr. Roberson, and Is married to the former Sandra Bunch of .Edenton. They have a daughter named Penny. Winfall Fire Dept. Sponsors Fish Fry The Winfall Volunteer Fire Department will sponsor a Fish Fry July 25 from 5:00 7:30 p.m. at the Perquimans County Central Grammar School. All plates will be to go. The defendant received a 60 day road sentence on the first charge which was suspended for 2 years upon payment of a fine of $100.00 and the further condition that he will not violate any alcoholic beverage laws. On the second charge he received the same fine and sentence suspended for the 2 year period, which will continue after the expiration date of the previous charge, with the further con dition that the defendant give wruien permission 10 me snerui, A. George Butler, charged with being drunk and disorderly, was given a 60 day sentence, which was suspended upon payment of a $25.00 fine and costs and with the condition that he will not be drunk publicly for 2 years, that he will remain off the premises of the Hertford Bus Station and will not molest W. James Arthur Williams, charged with escape from custody, was given a 60 day sentence, which was suspended upon payment of a fine of $50.00 and costs. The defendant was not tried for assault with a deadly weapon (the original charge) so the sentence was not finished at this time. C. T. Dixon To Serve As Area NCADA Chairman C. T. DIXON, Towe Motor Company, Inc., Hertford, has been appointed to serve as Perquimans County Area Chairman for the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association, according to an announcement by NCADA President George O. Stovall of Albemarle. Mr. Dixon succeeds R. L. HolloweU of Hertford. Dixon will act as liaison officer ' between new car and truck dealers in this area and NCADA and the National Automobile Dealers Association. He will be responsible for promoting the various programs and activities of NCADA and NADA and will head a county-wide membership campaign for both organizations in the fall.
