First In History
Fall ia here - that wonderful
time of the year when the tempo
picks up and people look forward
to going places, getting things
done, and meeting new friends.
It is the ideal time during
Perquimans County's Tri
Centennial in progress this week
- to do just that.
Perquimans County .. First in
History . . First in Pleasant
Living . . and First in the Op
portunity for Progressive New
Enterprise .
Perquimans is a "First" in
rriany many things, the history of
the county can hardly be mat
ched. Records of deeds begin in
Perquimans in 1685 and are the
oldest in North Carolina, also the
first recorded sale of land by an
Indian to a white man in the U.S.,
still in the ancient Courthouse,
the first church service; and the
first woman postmaster in the
United States, Mrs. Sarah
DeCrow Hertford's first post
master, and the first woman
postmaster in America.
Perquimans after reviewing its
History, is a "First".

Maybe you don't like rock and roll, but there's vibrancy to its beat
that lots kids express themselves. Even if it isn't your kind of music it's
their kind of music. Perhaps the "generation gap" may be narrowed
ilightly H you'll listen.
Life, remember, is a process of give and take. Adults and teenagers
have to give a little If they are going to reach mutual understanding. If,
In the beginning, you've given the basic things like faith, love and
respect, then you've nothing to worry about.
But it's never too late, for Instance have you gone with your teen
ager to church lately?

STUDYING THE BIBLE
International Sunday School Lesson for October 18, 1970
MEMORY SELECTION: "Teach me, O Lord, the way of thy
statutes; and I shall keep it unto the end. Give me un
derstanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it
with my whole heart." -(Psalm 119:33-34)
LESSON TEXT: Nehemiah8:l-8; Psalm 119:8-16. Acts 17:10
12; I Corinthians 12:31 to 14:1; 2 Timothy 1-2; 3:14-17.
In today's Lesson we begin a new unit; "Helps to a
Maturing Faith." It is no accident, therefore, that, in this
beginning, our text deals with the studying of the Bible.
To fully grasp a subject, one must know the right way to
study, and if one is in any doubt about this, ask any High
School student who has aspired to a College education! The
ability to study, the knowledge of the right way to go about
research and study, has made or broken many an aspiring
young person intent on a specific career! It has made them if
the ability to study was present; it has broken them if it was
not! .
How much more important is this ability when it is im
plied to our Immortal souls!
An integral part of our study today is Psalm 119. Through
this passage, as throughout all the Scriptures, one gains an
inspiring insight into the nature of the one true God. One
becomes more acutely aware of the Divine purpose, as
related to mankind.
We cannot afford to overlook one great salient fact. . . and
that is that the men and women who have proved to be the
backbone of the Christian faith throughout all the ages have
been assiduous students of the Bible. They read, they In
terpreted, they learned ... and they put the knowledge and
insight they had gained from its pages into practice in their
Uvea!
There certainly is guidance and comfort in its pages ...
inspiring words that will lift the student to hitherto un
dreamed of heights; words of comfort and reassurance that
will stand he who studies in good stead, in times of stress.
What other book serves mankind so well? From it he can
gain knowledge and wisdom; he can glean a guidance for
living; he acquires moral cleansing, and spiritual joy. What
riches lie between its pages! From it he can gain an un
dreamed of strength of spirit in times of adversity. From it
he acquires hope for the future! Truly, the power of the
Scriptures must not be taken lightly!
The Bible is, indeed, a Holy Book. It was God-inspired, it
was God-prompted. Throughout the ages many things have
changed in this world of ours. There is not, however, any
single misfortune or any single joy that can befall mankind
that does not have its counterpart in the Bible! Man's needs
never change - especially the needs of his spirit. And the '
answers are to be found in this one great Book.
To find them, however, one must not approach its study
lightly; to fully understand its message to mankind involves
diligent and regular study. It involves research into
background, and a "getting to know" the characters therein .
. . their strengths and their weaknesses, their faults and their
virtues. The time for this endeavor must be willingly set
aside; the place for it must be quiet and inducive to thought
And a comprehensive Concordance is essential. Thus
equipped, a whole new world is opened up to the student -colorful,
exciting, inspiring, maturing, challenging!
Can you, as a professed Christian, afford to delay?
