Perquimans Centennial Smack Dab In Middle We're smack in the middle of our Tricentennial celebration and our fondest hope this week is that everyone is participating and that everyone is enjoying the various events. And don't forget what's coming up, including that I WE ARE GLAD TO HAVE A PART IN THE GROWTH OF PERQUIMANS COUNTY 1 f 6. OWNED BY THOSE WE SERVE" Phone 426-5637 HERTFORD, NORTH CAROLINA parade. There will be another story elsewhere in today's paper on that. Another reminder: history books, hats, buttons are all still on sale in many places of business in the county or at the Chamber of Commerce office. Chamber President Joe Nowell Jr. and Chamber Manager Frank Roberts were on the Mildred Alexander Show on channel 3 last Friday and made a pitch for the celebration. It was several thousand dollars worth of advertising for the county that was invaluable. Even while the program was going on, a call came in to WTAR-TV from someone who wanted to know more about the county and wanted to visit during the celebration. We hope that interest will be multiplied thousand-fold. Many letters of invitation were sent out with the help of the BPW Club. We can't say much about the events that took place Sunday through Wednesday, as this was written on Saturday, but we can urge you to see the window displays, take the tours and visit the Penny Candy Store during the next couple of days and be downtown all day this Saturday for the many activities. IT M7 i Bill "Shorty" Stallings is planning to celebrate Perquimans County's 300th Birthday by parachuting into the Perquimans River on Saturday, Oct, 17. Mr. Stallings is a resident of Hertford and has made 350 parachute jumps in the past 18 years. He holds both a Senior Parachute Riggers License and a Class D Expert jum ping license. Mr. Stallings started his sky diving career as an Army Paratrooper, where he made 48 jumps, and he has continued to jump since that time. There are two scheduled jumps, the first of which will take place at 11 a.m. and the second at noon. The scheduled target area will be that area of the Perquimans River between the two bridges. Those wishing to view the jump from their boats are requested to anchor them near the edges of the river, and to avoid the open water near the middle of the river at the drop times. That section of U. S. 17, locally known as the "Causeway", will be closed to traffic between the hours A note of thanks to WOBR in Wanchese, WGAI and WCNC in Elizabeth City and WCDJ in Edenton for helping us promote the Tricentennial. Thanks also to the Daily Advance and the Virginian- Pilot and of course, to the Perquimans Weekly - all of whom provided invaluable publicity to us. VOTING AT 18 President Nixon has signed Into law a historic measure lowering the voting age from 21 to 18. He then called for a court challenge to decide if the measure was constitutional.
