Berry, P.M. Master of Ceremonies and a 50-year Masonic Veteran, discuss "old times" at the testimonial honoring Brother Stephens. Perquimans Lodge No. 106 honors Oldest Member: On August 18, 1970, fifty members of Perquimans Lodge No. 106, Hertford, honored Brother P.L. Stephens the oldest living member of the lodge. Brother Stephens will be 100 years old on October 27, 1970. Brother Stephens has been a Master Mason for 65 years, having been raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on November 20, 1905. Brother M.V. Walker, the oldest living Past Master of Perquimans Lodge No. 106, who joined the lodge the same year that Brother Stephens did, was also present. He is a member of the Great Bridge Lodge in Chesapeake, Va., and a Past Master of that lodge. Brother Walker is an Honorary Member of Perquimans Lodge. He expressed a great deal of satisfaction in being able to return to his "Home Lodge" and take part in this memorable occassion. Brother B.C. Berry Sr., P.M., and a 50-year Masonic Veteran, was in charge of the program. He gave a history of the lodge during the time the two distinguished brethen were raised to the Sublime Degree, and the years immediately following. This was very interesting and informative. Brother Stephens is still alert and in good health. He takes care of all his personal needs, is interested in all sports, writes regularly to five daughters, maintains a small garden, and did attend Sunday School and Church, without missing a Sunday until this past November. He is completely deaf, but wears a hearing aid which helps him when talking to someone close up. He decided that after attending church for so many years without hearing what was being said, he'd stay home. Brother Stephens expressed appreciation for the honor bestowed upon him, and credited his long life to good hard work and honest living. Perquimans County is honoring Mr. Stephens this week. Mr. Stephens tho now living in Elizabeth City belongs to Hertford. He lives most of his life here. We recently had a story in this paper on his life. He now resides with his daughter in Elizabeth City, Mr. and Mrs. A.C. Shannonhouse.
