Fort Raleigh, site of -the first Englist attempt
to colonize the New World, has long over
; shadowed the fact that Roanoke Island
has been .the home of several other de
fensive installations during the course of
its history.
During the Civil War, Forts Huger, Bartow and
Blanchard were built to defend the island.
Together, they mounted 25 guns. These
units fell under Union control in an as
sault led by General Burnside on February
8, 1862.
The original earthworks can still be seen at the
sites around the island. .
