"VI 7 r Slmburg, Virginia Tuesday Proverbs 14:27-32 Wednesday Lamentations 3:22-26 Thursday Romans 12:6-18 " FORGIVEN AND FORGIVING International Sunday School Lesson for March 14, 1971 MEMORY SELECTION: "Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors". - (Matthew 8:12) LESSON TEXT: Matthew 6:9-15; 18:21-35. Today our lesson is concerned with one of the most Godly attributes man is challenged to make his own. . .forgiveness. Christ, during His ministration, continually preached forgiveness. And who had a greater right, than He who died on the cross for the forgiveness of the sins of mankind? It is indicative of His great love for man that, even in His last agonies, His thoughts were preoccupied by the virtue of forgiveness, as witness His cry: "Father, forgive them, they know not what they do"! Christ not only preached forgiveness - He lived it. Time and time again He exhibited forbearance towards those who sinned repeatedly, towards His judges and His tormentors! And in reply to Peter's question as to how often should be forgive those who sinned against him, He answered: "Seventy times seven" . . .in other words, forgiveness unlimited! Such was the character of God, the Father; such was the character of Christ, the Son! This is an example we are constrained to follow, by reason of our great debt, for the Christian's status is that of a forgiven person. The truly oriented Christian can not be like the servant in our lesson today - he who was forgiven a debt of great magnitude by his master. . . and then promptly went out and persecuted those who owed him a debt of much smaller proportions! We must not be "wicked servants"; -rather, we must benefit from the forgiveness extended to us by passing it on to others. , .even our enemies! This is the challenge! Forgiveness unlimited Is the character of God, and of Christ. It therefore becomes mandatory on the part of the professed Christian. Only thud can he be truly acceptable to God. Forgiveness, practiced unremittingly, assures us that we continue to be forgiven. It prevents bitterness corroding our hearts, and it makes us a Joy and a blessing to those with whom we come in contact For forgiveness is born out of love. It was born, for us, out of the love of God and Jesus Christ Our debt is therefore eternal, and we can best repay lt hy practising charity towards our fellow men. We can lead by example. The shortcomings of man are many and varied, yet God forgave our sins, sealing His covenant towards us in the blood of Christ. We are continually in need of grace upon grace, forgiveness upon forgiveness, and it is never denied us! How, . then, can we dare to continually throw ourselves upon God's great mercy, without extending it to others from our own person? In essence, their sins against us are In relation to the debt the second servant owed the first, who had been forgiven the greater debt! Forgiveness, however, is of little value If the act that provided the need for forgiveness la not truly forgotten. It is no easy task to contemplate, but the fact remains that forgiveness should intimate the wiping clean of the slate. . .a new start. Forgiveness without forgetting is not forgiveness at all! v Christ died, not only for the past sins of man, but also for the future sinning of man. , ,for the generations as yet un born. In this, and In our sincere repentance, lies our hope for eternity.
