Aging Will
Convene April 3
The Region R White House
Conference on Aging will con
vene, Saturday, April 3, 1971, at
10:00 a.m. in the Elizabeth City
State University, Elizabeth City,
North Carolina, stated today by
Mrs. M B. Tavlor. the North
CarolinaGovernor'sCoordinating
Council on Aging for Region R
Chairman. The registration will
begin at 9:00 a.m. and ter
minated at 9:45 a.m. The ouroose
of this Regional Conference is to
consider the principal needs and
issues in the field and to con
tribute to the first formulations
of the 1971 National Policies on
Aging. These formulations will
be the basis for deliberations of
participants in the Governor's
Conference on aging in May,
1971. As a final step, the policy
proposals recommended by the
Governor's Conference will be
used in the White House Con
ference on Aging in November,
1971. This opportunity occurs
only once a decade. The Regional
Committee members are as

evening during the week at
7:30 and at 7:00 o'clock on
Sunday evening. There will
be special singing in each

Honorary Society
Martha Jane Evans,
mathematics education,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.L,
Evans of Rt. 1. Hertford was
among seventeen North Carolina
freshmen coeds at North
Carolina State University named
to membership in the nation s
leading freshman scholastic
honorary society for women,
Alpha Lambda Delta.
The 17 young ladies will be
initiated on March 17. All have
earned grade averages of 3.5 or
better for the first semester of
their freshman year, or a
:umulative average of 3.5 or
for both freshman semesters.
NCSU received a charter for
its chapter in December 1970 to
become one of 166 of the nation's
leading colleges and universities
to offer Alpha Lambda Delta
honors to its outstanding fresh
man women scholars,
These academically out
standing freshmen coeds
represent 12 Tar Heel counties.

WINSLOW LEE CARTER
March 14-21 has been set aside
as Youth Week at the Hertford
Baptist Church. This is an annual
event in which the youth of the
church take upon their shoulders
for - one week the church's
responsibilities for enlistment
and spiritual development.
This year a Youth Team from
Chowan College will conduct
services at 7:30 p.m. on Friday
(March 19th) and on Sunday
morning (March 21st) at 11:00
a.m. The purpose of these ser
vices is to strengthen and deepen
commitment to God and to His
Son, Jesus Christ. This Youth
Team will be composed of:
Winslow Lee Carter, a
sophomore, from Swansboro,
N.C, Winslow will speak at the
Friday evening and Sunday
morning services; Hugh Clark, a
freshman from Newport News,
Virginia; Linda Carawan a
freshman and pre-nursing
student from Chugiak, Alaska,
and Monica Alvarado, the fourth
member of the team is originally
from Santiago, Chile.
This Wednesday the Youth
Pastor, Wallace Nelson, will be
In- charge -f -the- Mid-Weffk
Service. Following the Friday
evening Service there will be a
fellowship for the youth in the
Fellowship Hall. On Saturday at
6:30 p.m. there will be a banquet
for the youth of the church who
are participating in Youth Week.
On Sunday, March 21st the
Youth of the church will assume
the responsibilities of all the
church offices; and on Sunday
Evening Wallace Nelson, Youth
Pastor, will speak at the Evening
Worship Service at 7:30 p.m.
Both youth and adults are
invited to attend these services.

The 10th District Meeting of
BPW Clubs will be held in
Hertford on March 21st. Clubs in

Registration will begin at 11:30
a.m. at Hepuord Grammar

A special guest will be state
president, Miss Mary Lou Bell
of Gastonia, N.C. and, during the
program, highlights of club work
will be given in reports from
each club.
A special feature will be the
selection of a young carper
woman from the district who will
go on to compete for the state
title at the state convention in
Wilmington, N.C. in June.

$45,000 Grant To Aid
Perq. Economic Development
Congressman Walter B. Jones
announced today an ad
ministrative grant to the
Albemarle Regional Planning
and Development Commission in
the amount of $45,000. Jones said
the grant has been approved by
the Economic Development
Administration of the U.S. Dept.
of Commerce. The grant will
provide an administrative staff
to assist In economic develop
ment and planning In the
counties of Camden, Chowan,
Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hyde,
Pasquotank, Perquimans and
Tyrrell. Washington County has
officially requested to be trans
ferred from the Mideast

Methodist Church
The Rev. Eugene M. Westley,
i missionary of The United
Methodist Church serving in
Nigeria, West Africa, will speak
bt the First United Methodist
Church, in Hertford, on Sunday,
March 21, at 3:00 p.m.
Mr. Westley. who has been
serving in the Sudan united
Mission in Nigeria since 1954,
was commissioned as a
missionary of the fcvangencai
United Brethern Church in
lAugust of 1954. He thqn was sent
to Nigeria where he has worked
in church development
teaching, administration,
bookkeeping, and during the las
term he has served as the Field
Representative of the Sudan
United Mission, United
Methodist Branch. Mr. Westley
has returned to the United States
on a regular furlough, and plant
to devote his time to itineration.
Mr. Westley was born in Corry,
Pa., and grew up in that area. He
