Student Signs Athletic Grant -"? . I j 1 V Wayne Phillips, grandson of Mr. and Mrs. E.T. Phillips Sr., of Hertford, and former P.C.H.S. student has signed a Track grain-in-aid to the University of South Carolina it was announced recently by University Officials. -"Wayne is an outstanding all round athelete, and we are certainly glad to get him." says head track coach John West. "As you know, he holds, or is part of five Beaufort High School records, and on a team with their record, well, it's just outstanding." For the last three years, Wayne has been running track for Beaufort High School in Beaufort, South Carolina; a team that has a combined record of 386 wins to only 4 loses over the last 19 years. This record includes 19 Consecutive Conference Championships, 17 Lower-StateChampionships, and 17 State titles. Among the records Wayne holds at Beaufort are: the 880 yard, run (half-mile) in 1:57.0, the long-jump at 23 ft. 1 in., and the high-jump at 6 ft. Vk in. He is also part of the school record 1 1 f v&f 4. m 1 I . t nouung instance meoeiey reiay, and Mile Relay teams. He runs The quarter mile in 48.9 sec. Wayne is the South Carolina State Champion in the 880 yrd. run, and is part of the State record holding Mile Relay team at 3:22.0. Early this June, Wayne was vited to the Palmetto all-state track team to participate in the annual Atlanta Track Classic. In the .meet that boasted a par ticipation of 17 states and a team from both the Bahamas and Washington D.C., the Palmetto track club finished a solid second. The mile relay team for which Wayne ran finished second in a photo finish that took 45 minutes to decide. Their time was an outstanding 3:16.0. -' Wayne attended Perquimans from September through Marsh of Mi eight grade year. He Is the oldest son of Master-Gunnery Sargent, E.T. Phillips Jr. who is presently stationed at , ' the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in Beaufort, South Carolina. R.A. Lassiter, Jr. Promoted To Staff Sergeant Raymond A. Lassiter Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond A. Lassiter of Rt. 1, Hertford, N.C., has been promoted to staff sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. ' sergeant Lassiter is an electrical power specialist at McConnell AFB, Kan., with a unit of . the Tactical Air Com mand which provides combat units for air support of U. S. ground forces. The sergeant is a 1966 graduate of Perquimans County High School. His wife, Pamela, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Sawyer of 200 Hilard Park Ave., Hertford. I - Floyd Benton Resigns As County Treasurer The Board of Perquimans uouniy vomimssioncri ac cepted the resignation of Floyd Benton, County Treasurer, with regrets, - at their meeting Tuesday, and appointed Mrs. Rebecca Dale White to fill the unexpired term. The Board authorized the - Perquimans Chamber of Commerce to have 5,000 Brochures printed. Education Board Request Federal Grant under the provisions of the Emergency School Assistance Program the Perquimans County Board of Education has forwarded a request for a federal grant in the amount of $50,345.05 to pay for extra personnel and materials to make education more effective under total integration. In conjunction with the grant a committee was formed for the purpose of planning and developing the project. Com mittee members were selected from a crosr'sSt&foT'bf the population and various organizations and groups in the community. The committee will meet monthly for the purpose of reviewing progress of the project and welcomes suggestions from the public pertinent to improvements that could possibly be implemented. Negro members are Mitchell Zachary, Mrs. Willie Harvey, Mrs. Estelle Felton, Henry Mallory and Joseph M. Spruill. White membership consists of C. Edgar White, Mrs. Flora Carter, R. Marion Riddick Mrs. Janice Winslow and Mrs. Ann Berry. Funds from the grant are expected to strengthen our educational system in the vocational and physical education fields. In addition, these federal funds will pay for in-service training programs designed to help teachers and educational aides teach more effectively in newly integrated situations. Ostomy Club To Meet The Northeastern North Carolina Ostomy Club will meet Sunday, Sept. 12th at 2:30 p.m. The meeting will be held at the R.E.A. building in Hertford, n.c. This is the call for the 13th Annual Albemarle Craftsman Fair which will open at the National Guard Armory In Elizabeth City on Wednesday, September 15. Thirty-seven booths will be manned by 45 craftsmen demonstrating old and revised crafts as follows: Wood Working, Pine Needle Craft, Wood Carving, Wild Fowl Replicas, Caning, Copper Tooling, Decoupage, Weaving, Fabric Sculpture, Pottery, Decorative Egg Shells, Felt Craft, Crewel Em broidery.Apple Dolls, Oshibana, Swedish Embroidery and others.;; "It is worth '. a visit to the fair to see a craft taking shape by adults and youth", states Mrs. Paige Underwood, Home Economics Extension Agent. The 4-H Youth Center will feature deomonstrators after school to 9:00 p.m. Perquimans County : will be represented by ;aftsmen : Mrs. Edwin Williams,' ft Mrs. John D. Lane. Youth craftmen include Sybil Hobbs, Sue Proctor, and Gail Proctor. Also, the Conserved Products Association will have Booth. Producers from Perquimans County will have pickles, jellies, jams, Preserves and conserves for sale. "All craftsmen will have ; An Amendment of the County Medical Budget In the amount of $1,918.00 was authorized by the Board to be made. Funds will come from the old Option Sales Tax. Henry Clay Stokes was re appointed to serve as a member of the County Jury Commission. The Board authorized the! District Health Department to! amend their Budget In the amount of $3,857.00, ' John Sledge : : - ai r arm rrnreau meeting The Young Farmers and Ranchers Association which is an affiliate of Farm Bureau met August 30, 1971 at the R. E. A. Building. Donald Madre, Chairman, opened the meeting with a warm welcome and began introducing guests. He introduced Albert Eure, Chairman of the County Organization, who stated he was impressed with the young farmers and Eure then in troduced John Sledge, a State Farm Bureau Official and guest speaker. John Sledge began by saying he was impressed by this group as much as any group he had met with. He said he was most impressed by the untapped potential for leadership and that the purpose of the Young Far mers and Ranchers Association was to tap this potential for leadership. Sledge then ex plained the Young Farmers and Ranchers Association step by step. He stated the organization was designed for people from 18 to 30, and its purpose was to develop leadership so that Ten Counties To Share In 8118,422 Labor Grant William B. Gardner, Chair man of Albemarle Regional Planning and Development Commission announced todav that through the State the U.S. Department of Labor has granted $118,422.00 to the ten Counties of the Albemarle. The Grant was authorized under the Emergency Em ployment Act recently passed by Congress. Gardner said the special grant may be used for public jobs by the cities and counties and the Region. He said the grant would be administered locally by the Board and the . Staff of the ARPDC. Each governing body in the Region was advised by letter today of the action -and products for sale, but their greatest satisfaction comes from sharing their talent with Interested visitors," comments Mrs. Underwood. Last year, over 5,000 visitors from North Carolina, 20 from other states, and one from a foreign country stopped by the fair and captured the feel of the craftsmen by asking questions and, observing crafts with over 300 years of tradition. Completes Training At Naval Academy Midshipman Thomas E Madre, son of Air Force Senior Master Sergeant and Mrs. Clarence T. Madre of Route 1, Hertford, N.C, has completed 10 weeks of rigorous Indoctrination training at the Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md. ' Along with 1,250 other new midshipmen, Madre attended lectures, .spent hours on the drill field, participated in physical conditioning and sports activities, and came to know the Naval Academy a little better The academy will be his home for the next four years until graduation and commissioning send him out into the active regular Navy. . Midshipman Madre is a 1971 graduate of Mountain Home High School in Mountain Home, Ind. PRICES CONTINUF. VP , The Bureau of Labor Statis tics has reported living costs were up three-tenths of one per cent In April with grocery prices showing the steepest two-month rise in a year and a half. The over-all living costs so far this year is half the amount1 of- the first four months of 1970. Is Speaker ':4V- farmers could be well represented in the future years. The guest speaker, John Sledge, then turned the program back over to Donald Madre, who held a short business session. He stated the organization would meet quarterly and there was need for some executive officers to complete the organization. Billy Williams was nominated from the floor for Vice Chairman and approved. Johnny Corprew was nominated for secretary treasurer and approved. There was discussion for the ned of a reporter for the association and Vice Chairman Billy Williams accepted the position of reporter. The meeting was then adjourned by Donald Madre, Chairman. invited to submit bids for any public positions they wish funded. A description of the positions to be filled, along with a budget for the position must be submitted to the Regional office in Edenton not later than Wednesday morning, .Sep tember 8, 1971. The special conditions of the grant states that the individuals hired must be unemployed and residing within the Albemarle Region. Special consideration would be extended to Veterans of the Indo-China, Korean and Vietnam Wars. Also the young entering the labor market, and individuals over -45.-Jobs designed to improve the en vironment should receive priority. Positions to be filled may not exceed $12,000.00 per year, including fringe benefits, however the average is running about $8,000.00. Gardner said the program has been funded for one year, however the Act calls for a minimum of two years employment. It is expected that the program will be implemented locally by October 1, 1971. The Counties and Towns are invited to direct their inquiries to the Regional Office by calling 482-8444, however, individual applicants for working positions should be directed to the local governing bodies. Winslow Named Area Chairman N.C. Auto Dealers CECIL C. WINSLOW, Win- slow Blanchard Motor Co., Inc Hertford, has been appointed to 'serve as Perquimans County Area Chairman for the North Carolina Automobile Dealers Association according to an announcement by NCADA President J. Fred Rippy, Jr. of Wilmington. Winslow will act as liaison officer between new car and truck dealers in this area and NCADA and the National Automobile D e a 1 e r s Association. He will 'be responsible for promoting the various programs and activities of NCADA and NADA and will head a county-wide membership campaign for both organizations in the fall. - Marching Unit Elects Officers The Perquimans County' Marching Unit elected officers for it 71-72 season. They are: President - Donna Dail, Vice President - Dawn Boyce, Sec. Treas. . Eva Newby, Publicity Frances White, Historian Vicki Meads. Tomorrow night at the half time of the Perquimans -Plymouth football game the unit will raffle off a Remington Automatic Shotgun - model 1100. Weight Control Meeting Set For Monday, Sept. 13 The first meeting of the Weight Control Camoaisn is scheduled for Monday, Sept ember 13, 1971, at 7:30 p.m. in Perquimans County Office Building, stated today by Mrs. M. B. Taylor. Home Economics Extension Agent. If you are in need of this type of assistance please attend this meeting. She urges you to take along the following items: a set of weight scales, a blanket, a note pad and pencil. C Of C Pays Tribute To Joe Nowell The Perquimans County Chamber of Commerce took some time out at its last meeting to pay tribute to one of its most active members and wanted to go on record as backing him in his efforts in behalf of this county, Northeastern North Carolina and the state. The tribute is directed to Joe Nowell of course. He is a past president of the Chamber, still an active board member, and as 1st District Highway Com missioner he is not only doing an outstanding job of helping to improve roads in the area he serves, but almost as important to us in this county is the fact that he is an excellent "am bassador of good will." Your Chamber manager covers about the same territory as Joe does and he has never - not even once - heard anything but the highest praise for this representative of Perquimans County. Besides being a fine per sonality and hard worker - he devotes much of his time to other activities, in addition to highway and Chamber work -that are beneficial to all of us in this county. , He is an outstanding citizen. For that reason the Chamber's Board of Directors wanted to go on record as recognizing and appreciating all he has done for all of us in this county, this district and this state. BPW Club To Sell Dogwood Trees The Hertford Business and Professional Women's Club is now in the process of selling dogwood trees. The new project is part of the continuation program of beautifying Hertford which the club adopted in co operation with the Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Commission. It Is hoped that each citizen of the county will purchase these trees to plant on their property, either in the yard or between the sidewalk and street. The plants which will sell for a $1.50 for the white dogwood and $2.50 for the pink dogwood may be purchased from any BPW member or orders will be taken if you call Mrs. Ann Young - 426- 5275 or Mrs. Marion Swindell -I 426-5614, project chairmen. Felton -Receives Bronze Star In Vietnam Army Staff Sergeant James A. Felton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Theodore Felton, Route 1, Hertford, N.C, recently received the Bronze Star Medal near Phu Bai, Vietnam. He was presented the Bronze Star Medal for distinguishing himself through meritorious service in connection with military operations against hostile forces in Vietnam. The medal, adopted in 1944, recognizes outstanding achievement. Sgt. Felton received the award while assigned as a motor sergeant in Headquarters Company, 2nd Brigade, 101st Airborne Division (Airmobile). The Sergeant's wife, Pauline, lives in (Box 3817), Philadelphia, Pa. Either Sex Deer Info Available Deer hunters who would like to have a personal listing of the 19 either-sex deer hunt areas adopted by the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission recently can now get these listings by writing the. Com mission. In recent years, the dates and boundaries of these hunts have been released to newspapers statewide and also posted in county courthouses. As an ad ditional aid to deer hunters, the Wildlife Commission has arranged to have copies of these either-sex hunt dates and boundaries made available to individual hunters upon request.
