declined to specify any figure.
"We have enjoyed a very
pleasant and profitable

other areas of the Southeast,"
Mr. Boyce said, "and we are
looking forward to Joining them

Of Student
Creative art can
be fun. Especially when
you're a third grader and
your teacher lets you
paint a picture on a piece
of fabric she's going to
use to make a dress.
Mrs. J. Peele, a
teacher at Lowes Grove
Elementary School in
Durham, recently bought
some white pique fabric,
cut an empire dress from
it, and drew squares on
the fabric with a black
permanent ink magic
marker.
She carried the fabric
to school and let each
student paint a square and
sign his work.
After the masterpiece
was sewn, Mrs. Peele
placed the dress in salted
water to permanently set
the paint.
'The dress is lovely
and the children are proud
of their contribution,"
reports Mrs. Bernadette
G. Watts, assistant home
economics extension
agent.
THE WHOLE WAY
"I can't believe I
walked the whole way,"
could well have been the
motto of the 186 partic
ipants who walked 23
miles in Granville
County's first Walk-A-Thon.
Purpose of the "long
stroll," was to raise
money to complete
Granville County's goal
for the State 4-H
Development Fund and to
help support other youth
programs in the county.
Each participant
solicited one or more
sponsors to contribute a
certain amount for each
mile walked, explains
Linda Bright, assistant
home economics exten
sion agent.
One grandparent,
anticipating that his
grandson would last about
three miles, generously
offered to pay two dollars
for each mile walked.
The boy crossed the finish
line and Grandfather
reached into his pocket
for forty-six dollars.
The Walk-A-fhon '
should help the youth pro
grams to the tune of
$3,000, the agent adds.

Suspicious Spots Found
In Perquimans Forests
By: Sam Taylor
Service Forester
Sam Taylor, Service
Forester, in his Forestry Notes
column says, "An intensive
aerial survey of the woodland in
the eight Northeastern counties
served by the Elizabeth City
District Office was recently
completed. The survey was to
detect possible outbreaks of
forest pest-either insects or
disease. Using a four-place
plane, flight lines are flown
north and south at two mile
intervals over each county.
Forest Service personnel act as
spotters and suspicious areas
are marked on aerial
photographs. A poloroid
camera may be used to take
color snapshots of the spot.
Later a ground reconnaissance
is made to determine the insect
or disease responsible. If
control action is needed the
landowner is notified and
recommendations are made
and assistance given. Normally
Know Your
People who are under 72 in
any months of the year and who
are getting social security
payments and working should
make sure their earnings
estimates for this year are up-to-date.
The report should be made
when the work begins and again
when there is a change in either
the work or estimated earnings.
Any changes in the estimate
made earlier this year should be
reported as soon as possible to
social security. The report can
be made on the post-card form
provided to every beneficiary
who works. If the card has been
lost, a visit or phone call to any
social security office can take
care of the report.
If people earn less than their
original estimate, reporting the
change may permit additional
social security payments during
the year. On the other hand, if
people earn more money during
the year than they estimated,
they may get social security
checks not due them and have to

Single dead trees or groups of

Only larger groups of dead or

During the most recent

located as follows: Hertford
County 2; Gates County 15;

his social security payments
