the United States the flag
and defense of the nation

The Corps dates from No
vember 10th, 1775. On this
day the Continental Con
gress in Philadelphia au
thorized formation of two
battalions to aid in the war
against England.
There had been compa
nies of marines in America,
but under British command,
and the two battalions were
the first American marine
units. The first captain
commissioned was Samuel
Nickolas. He opened recruit"
ing headquarters in the Tun
Tavern in Philadelphia,
since considered the birth
place of the U.S. Marines.
Though the Corps was de
commissioned shortly after
independence was won, Con
gress reestablished it in its
present form in 1798. Since
that time the Corps has
gained a worldwide reputa
tion as the toughest fighting
force under American com
mand. Its gallant spirit and
devotion to duty and coun
