The bride wore a gown of white organza. The empire bodice with re-embroidered crecon lace featured a Victorian neckline with tapered sleeves and a modified A-line skirt. Her gown was highlighted with alecon appliques over the skirt. She wore a shoulder train. Her mantilla was attached to a camelot headpiece. . The bride carried a semi cascade consisting of white roses and stephanotis. , Her maid of honor was Miss Dianne Warwick of Virginia Beach, Va. The bridesmaids were Mrs. Gregory Sutton of Newport News, sister of the groom, and Miss Sue White of Virginia Beach. All at tendants wore long gowns of wine velvet with azalea pink backs which fell in a loose drape. They carried nosegays of azalea pink carnations. Miss Wpnrlv Knicker bocker, cousin of the bride, was flower girl. She wore a long dress of white organza - trimmed in pale Dink. She carried a white basket trimmed with azalea pink carnations. Scott Watterson, cousin of the bride was the ring bearer. The bride was given in marriage by her uncle. J. Preston White of Virginia Beach, Va. The best man ' was Mr. . Malcolm Willoughby of Hampton, Va. The groomsmen were Mr. Steve Givens of Newport News; Mr. Francis G. Griffin, Jr. of Virginia Beach; and Mr. Donald Tomlinson of Trenton, N.JV The officiating minister was the Rev. Lee H. AWARD WINNER AT UNC-G , Fred Chappell, a professor in the Department of English at the University of North Carolina at Greens , boro, is the 1973 winner of the Sir Walter Raleigh Award for fiction for his novel, "The Gaudy Place." In 1972, Chappell was awarded the Roanoke Chowan Cup for poetry by - - the North Carolina Literary " and Historical Association. Charpell'8 other books incVjia two novels, "It is Tin e. For going away, the bride wore a navy blue dress, white fur coat, and navy accessories. She wore a rose corsage. The bride is the daughter of Mrs. James Franklin Jernigan and the late Mr. Jernigan of Va. Beach. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Gordon Scott of Newport News. The bride is a graduate of Frank W. Cox High School and Virginia Wesleyan College. The groom is a graduate of Warwick High School and attended Thomas Nelson Community College and Virginia Wesleyan College. The couple will reside in Newport News, Va. Miss Dona Lee White and Ernest Milton Chappell were united in a double-ring ceremony on Dec. 22 at 2 p.m. at Epworth United Meuioaisi VOUiui. auuuoi a setting of candlabras, white mums, and ferns, which were a memorial to the bride's late father, the Rev. Rick Pinner officiated. Mrs. Florence ' Nowell provided the wedding, and Wayne White, brother of the bride, sang. '. Given in marriage by her brother, Billy S. White, the bride wore a floor length gown of nylon with wide lace overlay., The gown was styled with an empire waistline and A-line skirt. Her detachable train was also of nylon trimmed in matching lace. The f ingertip veil of illusion was attached to a lace tiara. Her bridal bouquet consisted of white daisies and carnations. Miss Diane Griffin of Merry Hill, N.C. , cousin of the bride, served as the maid of honor. Bridesmaids were ' Miss Mildred Chappell, sister of the groom; and Miss Beth Winslow, cousin of the groom. The bridesmaids wore floor length A-line dresses featuring long Greek sleeves trimmed in match ing braid. The maid of honor's gown was identical in style, but was orange. Each attendant carried a long-stemmed gold mum with green streamers. David Ayscue, from Goldsboro, cousin of the groom, served as the best man. Ushers were Donald Ayscue of Hertford, and Carl McCoy of Goldsboro, N.C. Mrs. William T. Mann, sister of the bride, acted as the mistress of ceremony. For her daughter's wedding, Mrs. White chose a street length mint green polyester dress trimmed in lace. She wore matching accessories and a white mum corsage. The groom's mother wore a street length rose polyester dress with black accessories. She also wore a white mum corsage. Immediately following the ceremony, a reception was held in the church social hall. , For a wedding trip to Nags Head, N.C, the bride changed into a blue and white knitted dress and wore the flowers lifted from her bouquet. The couple will reside in Winfall, N.C. Miss White is a senior at Perquimans County High School and is employed by the Little Mint in Hertford. Mr. Chappell is a graduate of Perquimans High and is employed ath the Hertford Ice Plant. Prior to the wedding, the bride was entertained at a shower given in her honor by Mrs. William T. Mann, Mrs. James Griffin, Mrs. Lloyd Byrum, Mrs. C. D. Barclift, and Mrs. Clinton Winslow.The rehearsalparty was given by the groom' parents, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Chappell. ; ' PAP SMEAR All women should have a Pap Smear Test for cancer every year. White, Sr. visited their daughter and daughter-in-law Mrs. Reginald Baker the former Ann White last week in Beaufort County Hospital who is a surgical patient there. UNC-G OFFERS DOCTORATES The University of North Carolina at Greensboro offers 12 concentrations of doctoral degree study in six academic schools or departments. The areas are educational administration, curriculum and teaching, guidance and counseling, music education, physical education, English, psychology,' y child development and family relations, clothing and textiles, foods nutrition and food service management, housing and management and home economics education. During com mencement in May, '1973. UNC-G awarded 27 doctoral degrees. Milton Mann performed the double ring ceremony against a candlelight setting of palms, greenery and two silver urns filled with white gladiolus, snapdragons, mums, and fern. The sanc tuary was decorated with red poinsettias and the Christmon tree. Wedding music was presented by Miss Caroline Wright, organist and Mrs. Ray Kirby soloist. The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Everett Byrum, Route, 2, Hertford. The bridegroom is the son of Mrs. Catherine , Jordan Markham of 304 ' ; Pritchard Street, Elizabeth City, N.C. and the late Mr. i ; Byrd. , Mr. Byrd is the grandson of Mr. and Mrs. J. Elbert Jordan, Winfall, N.C. Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a formal gown of chantilly lace and peau de Sole with a empire waist. The bodice of chantilly lace featured a V shape neckline and long fitted sleeves which were finished at the hand with a ruffle. The A line skirt of peau de sole was highlighted by rows of chantilly lace and the hemline was banded with wide chantilly lace. The full length train of peau de sole edged with chantilly lace was attached to the empire waist with a ruffle of chantilly lace. Her viel of bridal illusion was attached to a cluster of chantilly lace flowers and pearls. She carried a white Bible topped with a white cymbidium orched. The bride's only ornament was a pearl necklace, a gift of her late grandmother, Mrs Joseph Carroll Byrum, 5 Edenton, N.C. -v Mrs. Roy CarMright, ; Elizabeth City was matron ; of honor.' Bridesmaids were Miss Cathie Byrum, sister of the bride, and Miss Diane Winslow of Hertford, N.C. The Junior Bridesmaids were Miss Kathy Harrell of GatesviUe, N.C. and Miss Mlndy Moore . of Silver Springs, Md. : : The honor attendant wore a formal gown fashioned as ; the brides except with short sleeves. The bodice was green velvet with a gold brocade skirt with raised designs in sequins. All attendants wore a small hairpiece of holly with red velvet ribbon bows and streamers, and also cross necklaces which was a gift from the bride. ' Miss Michelle McClenny, daughter of Mr. and Mrs, vEugene McClenney, Elizabeth City was flower girl. She wore a chantilly lace and peau de sole dress with a veil of illusion at tached to a chantilly headpiece. Her basket was filled with red carnations and small white mums. Master Hiller Fahey Byrum, III, son of Mr. and Mrs. Byrum, Edenton was ring bearer and wore a red velvet suit which matched the attendants dresses, Roy Cartwright of Elizabeth City was best man. Ushers were Paul Matthew Byrum, brother of :he bride, Hertford, Kenny Stallings,Christmas Belvidere; Kermit Copeland, Elizabeth City; and Steve Wheeler, Ports mouth, Va. - ' Honorary bridesmaids were Miss Shelia Byrum, Edenton, N.C.; Miss Joan; Column and Miss Deborah Saunders of Hertford, N.C. They were colorful formal dresses, holly corsages and necklaces was a gift from the bride. Mrs.' Charles Thomas Rogerson, Jr. and Mrs. Willard Copeland of Hert ford were mistresses of ceremony.
