A Selective
The Perquimans County
Board of Education has
approved plans to change
the. English curriculum at
Perquimans High School
from a traditional four year
program to a semester
elective system.
Members of the English
department have been in
volved in a self-evaluation
study of the present
curriculum and have con
cluded that renovation is
necessary to meet the needs
of many of today's students.
Plans have been made to
offer 16 courses during the
fall semester of next school
year and 23 courses during
the spring semester.
Students will be required to
1 take one English course
each semester but will have
the option of choosing
courses of interest to them, '
as well as courses needed to
prepare, them f or college,
Emergency
Vehicle
Allocation
The Perquimans
County Commissioners
agreed to have Dick
Long's service station
handle gasoline
distribution for county
emergency vehicles.
These vehicles will get
first priority on gas.
These are the sheriff's
department official auto,
rescue squad, public
health- nurses, and the
Winfall Sanitation
department.

Students who will be
entering the ninth grade for
the first time in September
1974 will be required to take
the course "Basic Grammer
and Composition" during
the fall semester. This skills
course in English is the only
specific title required for
graduation. Of the
remaining seven semesters
of English, students must
take one other course in the
skills area, at least two in
the literature area, and four
of their choice, g ,
Parents who , have
questions and interested in
learning more about the
i semester elective program
in English are invited to
visit the school on March 8
from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. The
English teachers will be at
work in the Library Building
and will welcome visits
from interested parents.

Fund
Auction
The Perquimans County
Auction for the Heart Fund
will be held Saturday.
V The auction will begin at
10 a.m. A number of items
will be offered.
Some of the items are
automobiles, crop planters,
radios, furniture, new
clothing, row markers,
chain saw, case of oil, and
many other items of top
quality. . . -
All items will be sold.
Proceeds will go .; to the
county heart fund. .

FRUSTRATING FRIDAY It was a wild day last Friday, ks Hertford
piotorist got in line for precious gasoline at two corner gas stations. The
fnotorist, lined up both ways on Front Street, Church Street, and Grubb
Street waited for a few valuable gallons of gasoline. Hardly all of the
tanks were given gasoline as it ran out. Hertford, it seems, is in worse

Stokes reminds county
residents of the new
postal rates which will
become effective as of
12:01 a.m. Sat., March 2.
The increase in rates
will be as follows: First
class postage - 10 cents
per ounce, post cards - 9
cents, air mail -13 cents
per ounce. The new rates
apply within the United
States. ;
Also, the single piece
rate for third class
matter will be 8 cents for
each two ounces or
fraction of two ounces
with a minimum of 10
cents.

postal rates such as
fourth class (parcel
post), special fourth class
rates, and library rates,
you are urged to call the
Hertford Post Office.

Judge Wilton Walker
presided at the Wednesday
session of Perquimans
County District Court and
heard the following cases:
Melvin Barrington Jr.,
(youthful offender) charged
with assault with a deadly
weapon, received a 12
months sentence suspended
for 3 years ; with : the
following conditions I, pay a
fine of $100.00 and costs, 2.
on probation for 3 years with
special condition that he
attend school regularly or
be employed, 3. restricted to
location specified by
Probation Officer, 4.
restricted to places he may
be found, 5. shall not con
sume any alcoholic
beverage;
. Dorcas . Lowder and
Charles Lowder, both
charged with assault with a
deadly weapon,' each
received ' a sentence of 6
months suspended for 3

Last minute filing was

County Board of elections.
Two persons, both having
no opposition filed for board
of education seats. These
were Ralph F. Harrell and
Clifford Winslow.
Keith Haskett filed for the
corner position. Haskett
has no opposition.
The county commissioner
race will see these names on
the ballots. Some in
cumbents, some not, some
with no opposition, some
with 'opposition. County
Commissioner hopefuls are
Jean P. Winslow, Edward L.
Nixon, R.S. Monds, and Guy
H. (Tuck) Wjebb.
Wells
Taking
Oath
ELIZABETH CITY
Dewey Wells, an interim
appointee of Gov. James E.
Holshouser Jr., will take
oath tomorrow as a superior
court judge.
The oath will be ad
ministered at 4 p.m. in the
Pasquotank County
Courthouse by Judge Walter
W. Cohoon, who is retiring
as resident judge of the 1st
Judicial District.
Wells, wo practices law
here and lives in Camden
County, will serve for the
remainder of this year but
said he doesn't plan to run
for election. Two
Democrats, Herbert Small
of Elizabeth City and Wilton
F. Walker Jr. of
Currituck County have
filed as candidates for the
remaining four years of
Cohoon's term.
Small, the son of the late
Superior Court Judge
Walter Small, now is
solicitor of the 1st District.
Walker is a district judge.
Wells will preside over his
first term of court in New
Hanover County starting
Monday, March 4. He is
resigning as a member of
the state Board of Con
servation and Development
to accept the judicial ap
pointment. He is a native of Raleigh .
and a graduate of Wake
Forest College, where he
received his law training.
He has practiced here for
the past 15 years.

Dail filed this week for sheriff of Perquimans County.
Jody is engaged in farming in Tyner area. He served on
the Hertford Police Department from 1967-70. He attends
Pentecostal Holiness Church, in Tyner Area. He is
married to the former Joyce Faye Lane and they have one
child, age 13.

Sheriff

Suspect
A suspect has been
arrested and is in the
Albemarle District Jail in
lieu of $5,000 bond for
allegedly robbing Hertford
Farmers Exchange of
money and merchandise
totaling $800.
The robbery ; took place
last Wednesday during the
night. It was discovered by
manager Howard Williams.
The Perquimans County
Sheriff's department, under
the direction of Julian
Broughton, arrested the
suspect Saturday.
Broughton told the
Perquimans Weekly,
district trial is set for March
6.
