At 11 a.m. on the 18, the 15 member commission will be English Lady Seeks Penpal A story appeared in last week's Perquimans Weekly concerning the return home of Harry Winslow and his family after a year's slay in Europe. While there, the Winslow family visited a town in England by the name of Hertford. As a result of that visit, a resident of Hertford, England has sent a letter to Bill Cox, mayor of Hertford, N.C. requesting a pen pal. The letter follows: Dear Sir: I have today read with interest the Stephen Lee Column in our Hertfordshire Mercury newspaper, which stated that one of your residents, a Mr. Harry Winslow, who with his two boys, visited our town while on a trip to London, as your town is named after ours, though pronounced differently. Mr. Winslow suggests that a lot could be done to "unite" the two towns, and I think this is a very good idea ; and I hope it will be as popular in your town as it will be here. I would like to do my own little bit towards uniting by asking you to help me find someone I could write to in your town, to exchange views, comments, etc. I am a housewife in my forties and have two teenagers; a boy and a girl in high school. I like gardening, reading, walking, etc.; and anything concerning my family, including football! I like doing welfare work, and used to do a lot for the aged, called aptly "Age Concern", but now I am helping younger wives who are "battered" by their husbands, called "Women's Aid". This is a situation that is only just coming , to light in this country unfortunately, but is of vast proportions it seems. We try to provide "homes" for these women to go to, if they are in terror of their husband's behavior. I hope you will be able to find someone for me to start off the first friendship between our two towns. With kind regards, , ' Yours sincerely, . Margaret A.
