Kt-e 6-The ferqulmani Weekly, Hertford, N.C., Thursday, July 25, M74 On The Street Where You Live Bv KATHY M. NEWBERN Staff Writer 1 would dare say that every day each person has to write Hbwn or give out his address. And if you live in a town or city this address will undoubtedly contain the name of the street ytat you live on. Streets are peculiar things which have a personality all their own. v ' A recent trip through Hertford resulted in the discovery of several unique streets. I'm almost sure that out of all the streets in this town, there is bound to be at least one that 'you've missed. V . There are at least two educated streets in Hertford. They are School Drive and Academy Street. Understandably, the 'first is located beside Perquimans County High School, and (he other beside the County Library. Several avenues and streets seem to have been named after local people. Hertford possesses a Whedbee Drive, Ainsley Avenue. Newby Street, Perry Street, Charles Street, Phelps Street, Saunders Street and Cox Street. V There are roadways whose names are logical. Edenton Hoad Street is the road which leads to Edenton. Municipal - Street is located beside the Municipal Building, and its little brother. Municipal Plant, is the street that leads you to the Ice Plant on those hot summer days. . Two streets located a block from each other seem to be counterparts. These are Sunset Drive and Crescent Drive. . ' Two of ye olde roads seem to have very much to do with this part of the country. Have you seen Carolina Street and Perquimans Street? And of course, there is one street unknown to many that fws a sweet ring to its name Gum Street. " And then there's Brace Street which definitely leaves one wondering? Punch Alley Is another unusual one, as well as Wynne V ork Road and Balahack Road. And don't forget Willow St. tuid Wingfield St., - V. : There is Front Street which in days gone by was a busy hipping center of Hertford. f '. Not all people are so fortunate as to have streets named fter them, but that is not the case for Hilda Matthews. The ? treet her florist was once located on is known as Hilda's. "Are there others? How about Gaston Dr., Gaither St., '"Kenyon Dr., Grubb St., Church St., Market St.," and Dobbs . And no story on streets in Hertford would be complete Vithout the mention of that ruler of all streets King Street. MP p ' 5 ! J : - S 1 MKiK'AL it seems that after awhile, our forefathers ran out of catchy names as Hertford grew, so the sensible thing to do was name this street after the railroad behind fit. ' THIS MAKES SENSE It's not very difficult to figure out how this street got its name. DANCE SATURDAY' The Elizabeth City Shrine i Club will have a dance iSaturday Night, July 27, 1974 from 9:30 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. for Shrmers and Guest. Admission will be $5 a couple. Music will be fur nished by the Countrvmen. FREE AND EASY With the sky as a background, one can almost picture this street sign flying away. WHAT'S IN A NAME? For Hilda Ainsley Matthews, her name and the street on which she lives are one in the same.
