McKinley Windley, age 46, of Rt 2, Belhaven was traveling south on U.S. 17 in a late model car. Windley, according to investigating officers, passed several cars , and lost control of the car he' was driving while traveling at a high rate of speed. These agencies helped water down the bridge to prevent a fire, aided in transporting the injured driver, and directed traffic which had been tied up for 20-25 minutes after the wreck. V'..,- ; ROBBERY i This service station was robbed of ap proximately $80 in cash when owner Alton Moore was closing Sunday night. The two black males involved escaped on foot. At press time, no suspects had been arrested. Two Men Rob Service Station Oak Point Service Station located on U.S. 17 north of Hertford was robbed at approximately 8:30 p.m. Sunday night. Alton Moore, owner of the stationalong with his wife was closing up for the night when two black males knocked on the front door. Moore motioned for the two men to come to the side door. They did so and en tered the station. The men took $80 in cash from the cash register and pushed Moore onto the floor. Women For the first time in Party history, the Democratic Women of North Carolina will select a President by direct election from the membership as the -distaff side of the Party gathers in annual State Convention in Charlotte this weekend. The Convention convened at the Downtowner East at noon on Friday, September 27th. State Party Headquarters in Raleigh announced a record turnout for an off-year election. Featured speaker for the Friday luncheon was former California Congresswoman Helen Gahagan Douglas, whose defeat at the height of the - McCarthy hysteria launched the political car eer of Richard Nixon. Mrs. Douglas was introduced by former Attorney General Robert Morgan, Democratic candidate for the Senate seat being vacated by Sam J. Ervin, Jr. Theme for this year's Convention was "Hearing a Different Drummer". Keynote Speaker for the Business Session which convened at 2 p.m. on Friday after the luncheon was N.C. Lieutenant Governor Jim Hunt. The banquet, which was held at 8 p.m. Friday night, was billed as a "Salute to Justice Susie Sharp". Justice Sharp, the first woman appointed to both the Superior Court and the Supreme Court Bench in North Carolina, is the Democratic candidate for Chief Justice of the N.C. Supreme ' Court in the November election. Principal speaker for the banquet was 6th District Congressman and former gubernatorial candidate L. Richardson Preyer of Greensboro. Attorney General, Rufus Edmict in of As the two alledged robbers left the stoore, Moore's wife ran out behind them screaming. One of the men grabbed her and pushed her onto the ground, then both men escaped on foot. Investigating the robbery was Perquimans County Sheriff Julian Broughton who reported that no suspects have been arrested in connection with the robbery. The investigation is continuing by the Sheriff's Department. Convene Boone. HALLOWEEN SCENE . a cornstalk and pumpkins in reminds passer-buyers that Two Arrested For Drugs Two drug arrests were made in Perquimans ' County between 7 and 7 :30 a.m. on Monday morning. v Arrested were Buck Lilley of the Chapanoke area and Andrew Lane of King Street, Hertford. Both males were arrested at their homes. Lane had four warrants out for his arrest, two for sale of heroin and the other two for possession of a controlled substance (heroin). Each warrant placed Lane under $5,000 bond thus making his total bond $20,000. There were two warrants out for the arrest of Lilley, again each at $5,000 bond. One warrant was for possession of a controlled substance, heroin; and the other for sale and deliver of a controlled substance, heroin. Both arrests were the result of two months of undercover work according to Perquimans County Sheriff Julian Broughton. And he further stated that; more arrests will be made sometime in the future. . ; Assisting Broughton with the arrests were SBI agents O.L. Wise and Bill Godley, along with police Chief B.L. Gibbs and Officer Harvey. Murray Is Named Local Chairperson ;! A chairperson for Perquimans County has been named by North Carolinians For Carson, the state organization working to elect Jim Carson for Attorney General. C.F. Murray of Hertford, will lead the Carson forces in Perquimans County, ac cording to John Boling, Carson's Campaign Manager in Raleigh. Murray is the owner of Murray Motor Parts Company in Hertford. He is presently a member of Methodist Church and a member of the Perquimans Masonic Lodge 106, Sudan Temple. Jim Carson became North Carolina's first Republican Attorney General in this century when he was sworn in August 26, 1974. Carson was appointed by Governor Holshouser to head the state Justice Department until the November 5th election. ' A native of Charlotte Carson had practiced law in- the Tarheel State for a decade when he was ap pointed a Judge on the N.C; Court of Appeals in 197X Prior to his service on thel Appeals Court, Carson had been elected to two terms ur the N.C. General Assembly,"; where he was responsible' for passage of the Habitual Felon Bill, among others. Lt. Commander Carson also served as a pilot in the U.S. Navy with the 7th Fleet. 39 year old Carson is married and ' the father of three children. During his first weeks as Attorney General, Carson has gained wide-spread, bi partisan support for his actions in retaining Charles Dunn as head of the S.B.I., and the establishment of a task force to fight organized crime. Attorney General Carson said he plans to further outline his priorities for the Justice Department in statewide appearances before the November 5th election.
