Thursday, November 14. 1974 ' . w V .1 i , I I - J I'AKl.TON FKRKBKE In the Pirates' Friday night game against Camden, Carlton Ferebee was also named as otfensive player of the week due to his tremendous job of blocking on running plays. Ferebee also got off very good pressure punts. DENNIS SMITH Dennis Smith was named as one of the offensive players of the week due to his work in the game against Camden. Smith made two receptions and did an outstanding job of blocking. He also kicked the winning extra point. Pirates Top Camden By One I CAMDEN Defense was the name of the game and Perquimans played it one point better than Camden. : The Pirates, on the wrong end of many close decisions during the campaign, closed the season with a win in a squeaker for a change. Camden's hopes of a win ning season disappeared by the margin of an extra point, losing 7-6. ; Camden's defense, a tower of strength in defeat all season, made only one mistake against the Firates and it cost them dearly. With only five seconds remaining in the first half, Nate Downing slipped behind the Bruin secondary. Strong-armed quarterback Tony Hunter connected with the fleet Downing to com plete a 63-yard scoring play as the first half expired. Dennis Smith added the eventual margin of victory with his point-after kick. Perquimans had missed an earlier scoring chance on its first possession of the contest. The Pirates rambled to the Camden one-yard line behind the running of Percell Skinner and Oliver Felton. Skinner bobbled the opportunity away with a fumble into the Camden end zone. Robert Gregory topped the Camden rushing attack, forcing a change in the Pirate defensive alignment, Pirates Bow To Gates "Gregory was something else," stated Perquimans Coach Celvin Webster, 'We had to go with an eight-man defensive front or he would have run through us all night." ' The troubled. Camden offense finally showed some spark in the third quarter with quarterback Greg " Abbott providing most of the fireworks. Abbott sprinted 63 yards through the Pirate defense for a touchdown. The Bruin conversion try went awry, and Camden was unable to dent the Pirate defense again. A victory would have pleased the Pirates playing before a large crowd in celebration of homecoming night. However, the win proved to De an especially important one' for the Gates team tieing them in the league lead with Murfreesboro. Due to Friday night's defeat, the Pirates have dropped two games behind the title co-leaders with only one conference game left to play. With the Pirates in a one point lead, the taste of a victory was on their lips when the Red Barons came back with a touchdown that beat the clock. The Barons were victorious despite a hustling Pirate defense. One of the game highlights was a low snap from the Gates center which resulted in a Pirate block against an attempted Gates punt. The Perquimans defense pounced on the ball nine yards away from the Baron end zone. Pirate running back Oliver Felton bounded to the four-yard line on two carries. Quarterback Tony Hunter then came back with a brillant fake on the third) down and was able to strut into the end zone untouched for the tying touchdown. Percell Skinner made the conversion kick putting the Pirates in the lead with minutes remaining in v.he homecoming ballgame. Hometown fans were ready to celebrate the end of homecoming week with a victory when the Barons. came back with a touch down thus ending the game in their favor 13-7.
