r Sunday School Lesson , , , ; COMMISSIONED TO SERVE 1 ,j, , (Matthew9:35tol0:l,16-20,4041) J.M. Mason once said, "They that deny themselves for Christ, shall enjoy themselves in Christ." ; 1 . To read the life and words of Jesus in the Gospels is to come to the deep conviction that Jesus cared for the welfare of people. He saw His generation as a field wasting to be harvested. ;,-';v;M, ' '.V'the'ilarvest.Matthew9:35to'10:l Jesus did not withdraw from the sorrowful sights of the world into which He came. "He went about all the cities and villages..' Jesus set the example for His followers. He did what He could to instruct the people. He preached the good news of God's concern for the forgotten masses. He healed those who were in need of the physician, , Jesus did all of these things because He cared. What He saw stirred His innermost being. The Bible says that He was moved with compassion on the people. He was not merely touched as we often are; He was moved! He saw the people as they really were. Many of them were fainting. They were borne down with life itself. They were scattered as sheep after some wild animal had suddenly come upon them.' Worse still, they were as sheep without a shepherd. With the thousands of religious leaders and teachers in the land, they were still without a shepherd. Jesus saw the masses as great fields of grain ready to be harvested. There was so very much that needed to be done just as there is in our day. Anyone who is willing to serve will find an abundant harvest. The Hardships, Matthew 10 : 16-20 Our Lord would never commission anyone to so great a task without first relating the hardships involved. He told. His disciples that He was sending them forth as sheep in the midst of wolves. They must be at their best. They needed to beware of men. Difficulties awaited them. Unjust trials, beatings, and mockings would become common treatment for them. ' Many would probably be hesitant getting involved in such an unpromising task. Timid souls would worry about how they could answer the trained and experienced governors and kings. Jesus promised help from "the Spirit of (your) their Father" in the hour of need. That promise is still as good today as it was in that day. The Happiness, Matthew 10:40-41 Emerson said, "Every personal consideration that we allow, costs us heavenly state. We sell the thrones of angels for a short and turbulent pleasure." Yes, personal con sideration keeps many from giving themselves in service. We need to hear afresh the words of Jesus. Those -who receive you will receive Jesus and the Father who sent Him. That places you in the company of God and His Son! : Anyone who receives a prophet as a prophet should be "received will share the prophet's reward. Service in the Master's, kingdom will not go unrewarded. Perhaps the . greatest reward is the shear joy of service! BIBLE QUESTION OF THE WEEK "Is it possible for a person to be saved by making the Ser mon on the Mount his rule of life?" . ANSWER No. The Sermon on the Mount was not given to enable one to come into a right relationship to God. It was given to those who were already within God's kingdom. The Sunday School Lesson is sent in each week by Clear Creek Baptist School, Pineville, Ky. 40977 and is written by' Professor Earl Clark. , 1, " - i- v Dear Friends, The religious funeral is usually public so that members of the bereaved's religious community can share their emotional and spiritual support and join in the affirmation of belief. OPAL WHITE NEW BEGINNING Our great nation is hear tag Bicentennial celebration salutes throughout her land and around the world. America had her beginning under the watchful eye of Almighty God. And, she was ordained to be who she is by Him. Yes, she had her beginning. And, those who made it happen ... our Pilgrim Fathers, had their beginning. God said, "There is a right time for everything" (Eccl. 3:1-8 TLB). He has designed time for mans benefit, therefore, ' new beginnings are written into the history of mankind. It is God's divine accommodation to benefit His creation and those who were created in His own image. So, we have been given a New Year. It can become a new beginning foreachof us. . On bumper stickers you may read: "Today is the first day of the rest of your life." God has assigned it to 3n mUemoriatn A tribute of love to the memory of my husband, Travers A. Trueblood, who pass ed away four years ago, Jan. 24, 1972. lost my dearest treasure, four years ago today. The loss I cannot measure, by words that I may say, Though absent you are ever near, kept close by memories I hold dear, Still loved, still missed with all my heart, Through memories we shall never part. Devoted Wife, Martha M. Trueblood be just for you. It is His way letting you know that He loves you and cares for you. '.His instructions for your new beginning is very sim ple; "If thou shalt confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thous shalt be saved. For with the - heart man b e 1 i e v e t h unto righteousness; and with the . mouth confession is made unto salvation" (Rom. 10:9, 10). Further assurance is given. "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold, aU things are become new" (2 Cor. 5:17). Also, notice ihat God affirms this new begin ning to be in the now of your life. "For He saith, 'I have heard thee in a time ac cepted, and in the day of salvation I have succoured thee: behold, now is the ac cepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation" (2 Cor. 6:2). The Believer also has many new beginnings along the way of life. In fact, one writer has this to say in regard to this: "Indeed it can be said from one point of view that that is what the Christian life is all about: it is being willing to began again." Christ the good Shepherd spoke of leaving the ninty and nine within the sheep cote to go and search dilligently until He had found the one lost sheep. The Apostle John recorded for us the beautiful transaction of sins forgiven by our loving heavenly Father when the . "little children" of His kingdom humbly confess them. Their "pardon is guaranteed through the high priestly ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ (I John 1:8, 2:1, 2). I recall that the great Babe Ruth struck out many, many more times than he hit home-runs. Yet,' we never think of those times of "striking out" when we think of him. Olffiiafhilffel else who thought ot us in any war. . during our bereavement, whether by prayer, phone calls, telephone, cards, flowers, words of comfort, food, or cash. We were deeply touch ed to know we have so many friends who care and snare. We still covet your prayers and we pray that God will always be your guide. Thank you.
