I visited the social se- ' carity office during the. tint week of last month. It was really busy, and I had to wait quite a while before I got to to someone, it the omce , always so busy? A. Usually wcla! aecurity offices are busiest on the first few days of the Week and durinar the first 2 weeks of the month. Unless your busi ness is urgent, the best time tn visit the office is at the end of the week or during the last half of the month. And it's a good idea to call the office first. Often, busi ness ean be handled' by phone and you won't have to make a trip. . Q. I started getting social security Undent benefits this month. I work part time and know my earnings can affect my . monthly payments, but does this include earnings I had before my benefits started? A. Yes. . In determining your social security benefits for the year, earnings for the entire year are counted. This includes months before your benefits begin, as well as months after your, bene fits end.' If you earn over $3,520 for the year, your benefits will be reduced $1 for each ?2 over $2,520. 1 rnnih o nn C-J ulju uou uj u us r- r-rN. n r I s v Whentem air conditioners for relief . And because air conditioners are such big users ofelwrtric The peak load. For us here at Vepco, it will mean that virtually all of our equipment may be operating at peak or hear peak capacity to provide this electricity. And this is expensive. This heavy demand for electricity is called peak load. And it's one reason why electric rates for over 600 kilowatthours per month are higher in the summer. Let's take a closer look. How peak load affects your rates. vBecause the demand for electricity is greater in the summer than the winter, we must have generating equipment and facilities to handle it. Even though this equipment may operate only during this peak load Ceriod, we still avetopayfor it throughout the entire year for things like maintenance, interest payments on the money that we borrowed to build it, and labor costs. Therefore, to offset these costs, higher rates are charged . to customers who help create the heavier summer demand. How to take the peak out of the load. Peak loads generally occur on weekdays, ' rather than weekends when many indus trial and commercial operations are shut down. The biggest way you can help is by shifting your heavy weekday consumption of electricity awaj from the peak times of the day. And by reducing peak loads, we could cut the cost of providing equipment and facilities that operate only a small portion of the year. ??: '..'V;.".v 1 v". .i"z: V:.;:::.':.-:m m ... EEE Fourteen ways to help during a peak load period. Temperatures in your home are very important, especially with your air conditioner running. 78 degrees is the recommended setting in most cases. How ever, when it gets super hot, remember never to keep, the inside temperature more than 15 degrees cooler than the outside. Air conditioners are a blessing, but make sure yours gives you its best. Keep filters clean. Dirty inters win 1 run up your cooling costs. Also, be sure large pieces of furni- r- - iuiv aivu i iiuviviiit C yuur a.n ujuuiuuuci & circulation of air. Buying an air conditioner? Be sure to buy one with a high Lnergy Efficiency Ratio (EER). ItH save you money on rwvrntino posts:. An EER of 6 to 7 is lair, 8 to y is good, and 1U or higher is excellent. Refrigerators and home freezers are big energy users, iveep door opening to a minimum and avoid overchilling. 40 de grees is the recommended setting for refrigerators, 0 degrees for freezers. Check door gaskets. If a dollar bill doesn't fit snuelv when the door is closed, it needs replacing. And defrost the units before frost is one quarter inch thick. Dishwashers should be used only when there's a full load. So wait till it's full and then run it late at night or early in the momine. And to a ....... reduce costs on your disnwasner, turn n off when it starts the drying cycle. Laundry is most economical when you use cold water detergents and full loads. Also, on weekdays use your washer and dryer early in the day or late at night. Showers generally use less hot water than tub baths. But don't let your youngsters stay in there for 15 to 20 minutes. That's a lot of hot water and money down the drain. One final reminder, on weekdays try to use your electricity as much as possible before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m., when the weather gets really hot. By following these simple tips, you can help us reduce peak loads and help control your electric bill. . n n
