VEACH, 1 PROJECT COORDINATOR At a meeting Tuesday night, the Resource Con servation and Development (RC&D) Council approved the reports and adopted a number of specific RC&D Measures. The RC&D Measures were proposed by the eight working Com mittees and will be in corporated in the Project Plan. The committees were charged to keep in mind the overall purpose of the RC&D Program in Region R which is "to plan for and to promote the orderly development and prudent use of the Region's resources." These resources include but are not limited to: people, land, water- plants, animals and man-made improvements. Regionwide Participation One man from each of the ten Albemarle counties was named to each of the eight Resource Committees. They chose their own Chairman. A team of Technical Ad visors was assigned to and assisted each Resource Committee. "Open Ended" Project An interesting fact is that the Albemarle Region RC&D Project has no ex piration date. Albemarle Region is unique in that it contains 61 percent of the water resource of the state of North Carolina. The Outer Banks, marshes, large and small swamps further distinguish the ten county Region. More than half of the land area is woodland. The varied soil series are managed by land users to produce row crops. The water, marshes, swamps, woods and fields provide habitat for fish and wildlife that are at home here. For the Sake of People The RC&D Project ap proach gives the people of the Albemarle an op portunity to relign and speed up the resource conservation and development of their natural resources. They will thereby strengthen the economy and enhance their opportunity for good living. Local People Are the Key In the Albemarle Region RC&D Project, all interest rural, suburban and urban work together. The RC&D Measures that make up the Project and the Project itself are self-help bit surprising since he has been a State Highway Patrolman for the past 14 : years.', HowevervJIims is managing to be-involved in the best of two worlds. He's going into the real estate business and will still per form his duties as a patrolman. Mims said he's been want ing to go into real estate for about four years, and now that dream is becoming a reality. He obtained permis sion from the Highway Patrol as set up under the agency's policies and pro cedures. After completing a real estate course at College of the Albemarle in Elizabeth City, studying at home, and efforts. Local people get the local interest measures or "jobs" going and make them work. People working together plus teamwork between public agencies assisting the people make for a successful RC&D Project. The concept brings out that local development . in the Albemarle Region will proceed as effective leadership and local support in the area develops. Local Sponsors The RC&D Project is sponsored by the Boards of County Commissioners and the Boards of Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisors of each county. One member of each orginization plus three members at large, comprise the RC&D Council. Adopted RC&D Measures are designed to help solve a problem or meet a need determined by the Resource Committees. The eight Resource Committees and Chairmen are: Land & Water, M. E. Knight; Agriculture, Floyd Mathews; Forestry, George Henderson; Fish & Wildlife, Bob Hester; Recreation & Tourism, Terry McGovern; Business & Industry, Bob Moore; Communication & Transportation, J. C. Saunders; and Comminity Facilities & Services, Dennis Burgess. getting a broker's license from the North Carolina Real Estate Board, Mims is now literally in business. . C.H. Mims Real Estate Company is now established and will be in full operation by Aug. 1. The father of three is operating out of his home at present and the venture has truly become a family affair. His wife, Pat, will be acting as secretary for the business and the three Mims children, Charles Jr., age 17; Sherry, age 14; and Emily, age 10, all like the idea and are en couraging their dad in his new business. Later, Mims hopes to have the business incorporated, but at present his is already busy with JACK AND THE BEANSTALK? This picture almost seems to suggest the fairy tale where young Jack climbed up to see the giant. However, it is not a beanstalk and it is not young Jack. Shown above is a 19 foot sunflower grown by W. Talmadge Lewis of Rt. 2, Hertford. Lewis is shown standing beside the large plant whose flower measured more than 12 inches in diameter, (Newbern photo) A Few of the Adopted RC&D Measures Encourage landowners of Region to see a professional forester before selling timber. Begin an Accelerated Soil Survey, Perquimans and Chowan counties. Drainage Measures on school grounds, Tyrrell County. Waterbased Recreation Park, Town of Hertford, Perquimans County. Toll free telephone service the whole of Gates County. Critical Area Treatment Marine Resource Center and County Airport, Dare County. Scuppernong River Flood prevention and drainage measures, Washington County. Determine the feasibility of a processing plant for soybeans in the Area. Encourage the Depart ment of Transportation to designate U. S. 64 as the m ain highway to the coast. Put a heliport at Corolla for Medavac, Currituck County. Improve Goose Population, Hyde and Currituck coun ties. St. Lydia Flood Prevention and drainage, Hyde County. Knobbs Creek Flood Prevention and drainage, Pasquotank County. Joyce Creek Flood Prevention and drainage, Camden County. Business several possibilities in the making. When asked why he chose to go into real estate, Mims said, "There is only one other active licensed broker in Perquimans County. I just saw it as a financial op portunity. I hope too that it will be a service to the peo ple." As a broker, Mims will be dealing with residential,; commercial, and farm (woodland) properties. He plans to concentrate in Per quimans, Pasquotank and Chowan counties. And so after four years of dream ing, and seven months of study and course work, C.H. Mims, Highway Patrolman, now takes on the additional title of broker. i
