Dear friends,
How comforting it would be to the
dying to hear, while they still can, all
the good things that their friends
admire about them. Why should these
things be left unsaid until after death?
It would be reassuring to know the
value their life has been to others.

. THE WAY OF UNSELFISH SERVICE
Markl0;3545
Shortly before the crucifixion Christ and His disciples
were going to Jerusalem, and He told them again of His ap
proaching death and resurrection.
The Request 10:35-37 1
James and John displayed shrewdness in planning first to
get a pledge from their Lord and then to make their request.
They asked to get a sort of blank check from Christ for
future benefits, that they might fill it in as they desired. But
the Lord does not issue such checks.
When Christ asked what they desired, they bluntly said:
"Grant unto us that we may sit, one on they right hand, and
the other on they left hand, in they glory." Their selfish re
quest for preferred positions in Christ's kingdom was made
in ignorance of God's plan. God does not reward His
children according to their selfish desires, but according to
their faithful service. How could they have been thinking of
themselves while Christ was explaining about His death?
r The Reply 10:38
Realizing that they did not know the significance of the
thing they asked, Christ replied: "Ye know not what ye
ask." They did not understand the cost of the places of
honor they had requested; the suffering that must precede
the glory. Christ asked them, "Can ye drink of the cup that I
drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am bap
tized with?" His inquiry was for the purpose of teaching
them what was involved in their request.
Frequently we, too, pray glibly for certain things without
realizing what we must face if God answers our prayers.
For example, we pray to God for patience, for holiness, or to
be made more like our blessed Lord, and when God begins
to answer our prayers by leading us into affliction, we com
plain. The Response 10:39-40
Quickly the disciples responded, "We can," even forget
ting to add "by thy help." They revealed their ignorance
when they declared their ability to drink "the cup" of His in
ward sufferings, and "to be baptized with the baptism" of
the outward sufferings imposed upon Him by others.
However, it is well to remember that James became the
first martyr of the apostolic group, and John was the last
one of them to lay down his life for Christ.
The Resentment 10:41
The other disciples were disturbed when they learned that
James and John had been trying to steal a march on them
by asking for the chief place in the kingdom. Their indigna
tion was natural because they thought an unfair advantage
had been taken of them. They were incensed at the assump
tion that the two were superior to the other ten. In reality,
all were alike and each was desirous of the chief place for
himself, Asa rule, it is our own faults that we condemn most
when we see them mirrored in others. If James and John
had had the right spirit, they would not have made their re
quest. On the other hand, had the ten had the right spirit,
they would only have thought that the two had acted
foolishly. Instead, being angry, they showed their resent
ment by their looks, words, and actions.
The Requirement 10 : 42-45
Christ was grieved by their jealousy and quarreling. Has
CARD OF THANKS
We, the family of Jack W. Hirrell, wish to take this means to
express our sincere thinks to each and everyone who remembered
us in any way during the illness and death of our loved one.
For the beautiful flowers, cards, gifts, visits and prayers and all
other acts of kindness shown, we are deeply grateful.
Mrs. Jack W.Harrell
and Children
it ever dawned on you that nearly all church troubles come
about by one or more members having a desire to be
honored, to rule, and to be pleased instead of desiring to
serve and to help?
It is interesting to note how Christ dealt with that situa
tion. Determined to nip in the bud their bickering, Christ
reminded the disciples that ambition for power over men
belongs to the world. In His kingdom, ambition is to be for
service onlyand not dominion. According to Christ, a disci-,
pie is great if he renders great service. Greatness consists
in the extent and quality of one's service. If any man desires
to be great on the day when rewards are distributed, let him
see to it that in this life he takes a lowly place of loving ser
vice on behalf of his fellow believers, letting the love of
Christ be his impelling motive.
