ELTON D.LAYDEN IThe Piney Woods Quaker Church . hosted a Lay Witness Mission group. They were witnesses for Christ and came from all over North Carolina. They had charge of all the ser- vices at the Piney Wood Meeting House over the Weekend. The ladies of the church served meals to the visitors several times with a farewell meal after Sunday morning services. I Mrs. Joe Ward and Mrs. Qdwin White had several 3 embers of the group at a ffee Hour at the home of Mrs. Ward in Hertford. Mrs. L.L. Winslow and Mrs. For rest Cale had other groups at their homes. Mrs. Lind sey Bunch had the teenage gfroup at her home Saturday morning. (The guests gave their testimonies and experiences ia the fine work they had undertaken for their faith apd were an inspiration to all those who participated. IMr. andMrs. Mac White, Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Winslow, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Winslow, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Winslow, Mr. and Mrs. Elroy Chappell, Sr. and Mrs. Ken Spivey, r. and Mrs. Robert Phthisic and Mr. and Mrs. McCoy Phthisic were, kind enough to have the visitors as guests in their homes dur ing their stay here. ;Mrs. Ellis Winslow and daughters, Sara, and Leah Harris.and Janet Barber at tended the Ringling Bros. Barnum-Bailey Circus at Scope in Norfolk, Va. Satur day afternoon. The Belvidere Home maker's Club met Tuesday Evening, February 22 at the home of Mrs. Reuben Knopf Sr. Mrs. C.T. Rogerson Jr., president, called the meeting to order and called on Mrs. Knopf for the devo tion, in keeping with Shrove Tuesday and the up-coming season of Lent. Mrs. Knopf Selected passages from the Bible telling the story of Passion Week, she selected, read a daily prayer, then prayed her own personal prayer. I Mrs. Paige Underwood, county agent, showed slides. The theme of this part of the program was "Blight Ideas for Energy in the Home." '; Mrs. Ellis Winslow, secretary, called the roll . Woodville & 'Durante Neck News Briefs : The Woodville Senior Citizens held their monthly meeting at Moore's Rest Home with President Mattie Whidbee presiding. By-laws were read and explained to the club members. Valen tine gifts were exchanged and refreshments were served. Rev. and Mrs. Walter Leigh, Mr. and Mrs. James Turner and Mrs. Earlene Sellers attended the Democratic Party Fund Raising Supper held Mon day evening at Angler's Cove Restaurant. . J . Layden, treasurer, gave the financial report. The Spring District meeting will be held April 14 at the Recreation Center in Elizabeth City, N.C. Registration will begin at 9 and the meeting at 10 a.m. The meeting of the club in March will be held at the Belvidere Community Building and will be a sup per for the families of the ladles. Mrs. W.T. Riddick, Mrs. Oliver Winslow, Mrs. Brenton Winslow and Mrs. Elton D. Layden will be the hostesses for this meeting. During the show and tell part of the meeting Mrs. Tommie Ellis showed a number of pillows and a small quilt she had made. The members closed the meeting by reciting the Club Collect. Recreation was conducted by Mrs. Estes Copeland with Mrs. Elton D. Layden winn ing the prize by finding the hidden picture of George Washington. Mrs. Knopf served delicious refreshments to bring the evening to a most enjoyable close. Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Layden entertained a number of their friends with a houseparty over the weekend. Their guests were Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Gore, Messers Michael P. Kolad viej, Glen Dixon, Darrell Hudson, Edwards Schick Jr. and Miss Gail Becker all of Virginia Beach, Va. Those from Belvidere who attended the Eastern Quarterly Meeting at Cor inth, Va. Saturday, February 19, were, Kenneth Spivey, pastor of Piney Woods Quaker Church, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Winslow, Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Winslow, Mrs. J. Olivet Layden, Mrs. Howard Chap pell' Mrs. Louis Spivey and Mrs. Sylvia Copeland. Miss Jan Layden, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. . Oliver Layden, continues ill at her home with the flu. Mr. and Mrs. W.T. Rid dick visited their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. James Malco, at Point Har bor, N.C. Sunday afternoon. Miss Brenda Layden, a junior at Atlantic Christian College, recently became a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority. Brenda is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Layden. Sigma Sigma Sigma is a Na tional social organization and was founded in 1898. There are 73 college chapters and 140 alumni organizations in the United States. Congratulations, Brenda. Mr. Van Harris, student at N.C. State University at Raleigh, N.C, visited his wife over the weekend. Miss Barbara Layden sang several songs at the Chowan Hunt Club dinner. The affair was held at the Chowan Academy lunch room Saturday night. A large crowd attended the affair. Don White, student at N.C. State, spent the weekend recently with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mac White. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Har rington had Mrs. Har rington's sister, Mrs. Irma Morgan from Portsmouth, Va. as their guest for a few days. During her stay they , had the pleasure of atten ding a Cantata at the First Methodist Church in Hert ford. The three Youth choirs combined to give the presen tation, "Story-telling Man." It was reported as a very impressive presentation and was directed by Miss Caroline Wright. Bethel Extension Homemakers Club met at the home of Mrs. Clarice Newby on Wednesday, Feb. 23. Mrs. Newby, president, presided. After the devotion a discussion was held on the Emergency Energy pro gram that has been pro vided for the county. Mrs. Newby explained the cancelled stamp program which the club has been asked to participate in for the needy children ia another country. Mrs. Vanora Brothers talked about the program of work on Safety which will be car ried out during the year. , After the announcements, Mrs. Newby adjourned the meeting and refreshments were served. Mrs. Easter Creecy was hostess to the Senior Usher Board of New Bethel on Wednesday night. Mrs. Alice Thatch and Lee Stepney were welcomed as new members at a short meeting on Sunday. The New Bethel Senior Choir were among the many groups that participated in Wine's Grove choir anniver sary on Sunday. Come bring your friends. The Bethel Ruritan Club held their February meeting Thursday night at the Bethel Community House. An in teresting program was en joyed with Mr. Herbert Nix on giving a timely talk con cerning "restoration.'.' Other guests heard during the evening were Mr. Fen ton Eure, Jr., district gover nor fdr the Albermarle District, from New Hope; and Mr. Arthur Harrison, Jr., zone governor for the area, from Elizabeth City, N.C. ' Mr. and Mrs. Bill Perry and son, Timmy, visited their son and his family, Mr. and children were weekend guests of his parents in Edenton, N.C. Mrs. Vanessa McClenney was honored at a baby shower Saturday afternoon. It was given by her aunt, Mrs. Vanora Brothers. The Bethel Community 4-H Training Club held its first meeting Saturday, Feb. 26 at the home of Mrs. Alice Thatch. Newly elected of ficers are: Tedro Johnson, president; Issac Jones, vice president; Teresa Spruill, secretary; and Sandra Thatch, assistant secretary. Betty Jones, treasurer; Lee Jones, George Long, and Demetrios Bonner, chaplains. On the sick list this week are Mrs. Jan Spruill and Mrs. Dora Long. Mr. and Mrs. James Talley and daughter spent the weekend in Hampton, Va. Mrs. Maurice Felton and sons of Elizabeth City were weekend guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ike Skinner. They also visited with Mr. and Mrs. Alphonso Felton Sr. ' Charlie Brothers of Baltimore, Maryland, visited with his mother, Mrs. Maggie Brothers, dur ing the weekend. Jeff and Christine had the misfortune of hav ing a fire at their home last week. Master Jar Corprew, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Cor prew, went with others in his kindergarten class from Hertford Grammar School to Norfolk Scope on Thursday to see Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus. A good trip and lots of fun was enjoyed by the group. Miss Ellen Long from Henderson, N.C. visited her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Em mett Long last weekend. The Snug Harbor Civic League met at the Club House recently for their regular monthly meeting. Plans were made for a dance to be held on May 14. Plans were also made for an Easter program. "The Countrymen" Band from Elizabeth City, N.C. will play for the dance. Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Long and Mr. and Mrs. C.T. Phillips visited with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Phillips at Virginia Beach recently. The group enjoyed a birth day dinner in honor of Mr. Thomas Phillips' birthday anniversary.
