- r>. . ; * - " Schools participate in screening . The Perquimans County .Schools in cooperation with the Pequimani County Health Department will begin screening children in grades 4-6 (or Scoliosis (curved spine). Scoliosis or curved spine is a condition where there usually exists two curves; the original curve of the spine and a compensatory curve in the opposite direc tion. This condition cm develop in five to ten children out of every 100, and two to four per 1,000 will require treatment. If this condition is detected early enough, a severe, painful and costly deformi ty may be prevented. The screening for Scoliosis will be performed by the Health Department school health nurse and/or school health nurse who is specially trained to look at the child's back. The screening process involves a simple "forward bending test." Dept. seeks participation The Perquimans County Department of Social Ser vices is requesting more citixen participation in the : planning process which determines the services of fered by the Department to ? Perquimans County. . These services are of fered to the public to help ? them in their individual day ,to day lives. The Department is then requesting that any in dividual or group of citizens in Perquimans County who see a need for particular services, contact the Department either by telephone or in person .dur ing the weeks of Feb.As-17 and 20-24. A public hearing pertain ing to services needed will also be held on Feb. 27 at 3 .m. at the Couniy Court ouse. Office hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. "Monk Harrington has announced his intention to run for reelec tion to the North Carolina Senate {or the 1979 Session of the General Assembly. Senator Harrington, a native of Lewiston, N.C., and president of Harrington Manufactur ing Co., has served the First Senatorial District continously since 1963 for a total of eight t^-year terms. He is One of two senators representing the First Senatorial District which is comprised of Beaufort, Bertie, Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Dare, Gates, Hertford, Hyde, Northampton, Pasquotank, Perquimans, Tyrrell and Washington Coun ties. During the current 1977 Session of the General Assembly, Senator Harrington is serving on the following Senate committees: Transportation (Chairman)* Election Laws (Vice-Chairman), Rules (Vice-Chairman), Agri culture, Appropriations, Base Budget, Constitutional Amendments, Economy, Finance, Law Enforcement, University Board of Governors and Ways and Means. He has chaired the Transportation Committee for the last ten years. During this interim Senator Harrington is serving on the Legislative Services Commission and is one of three senators serving on the Utility Review Committee, an in dependent study committee monitoring the state's public utilities. -?
