MEETING GOD IN PUBLIC WORSHIP
Psalm 84:1-12
The writer of this psalm had a passionate seal and eager
longing to return to Jerusalem, and to the sanctuary of the
Lord, where the name of Jehovah had been exalted, where
His glory had been manifested, and where He had been
worshipped by the Israelites. It is refreshing and encourag
ing to have fellowship with people who delight in worship
ping God in His house with regularity.
Satisfaction Through The Worship of God ? Psalm 84: 1-4
The Psalmist had an enexpressible longing to return to
the Temple in Jerusalem to worship God from Whom he
had received so many blessings. For the spiritual blessings
and precious memories associated with that hallowed
place he was grateful beyond expression. Recalling our
own experiences, we remember those churches whose ser
vices we attended years ago, whose members introduced
us to the Saviour, into whose membership we were bap
tised, and whose leaders proclaimed to us the Word of God
and nurtured us in the Christian faith. Frequently we long
to return to those scenes of former years and worship our
God again with those whose Christian love and encourage
ment have meanst so much to us through the intervening
years.
Eager to be in the Temple of Jerusalem again, the
Psalmist thought of how fortunate the priests were in hav
ing committed to them a work that enabled them to spend
so much time in those sacred precincts, and he truly
wished that he might share with them the privilege of hav
ing communion with God there again as he had in the days
of yore.
Strength Through The Worship of God ? Psalm 84:5-8
The Psalmist was sustained and enabled to endure his
hardships by the joyful anticipation of getting to worship
God again in the Temple. He learned from experience that
many difficulties lie in the way of all who try to live in a
godly manner. As we journey through life we, too, en
counter many dangers and trials, and find ourselves in
need of so much strength which we do not have. It is so en
couraging to learn that through true spiritual worship of
God adequate strength will come to us for every experience
and exigency of life ? including temptations, toils, trials,
and tribulations. Failure to worship God will deprive any
Christian of much-needed strength, but, if you will yield
your self and substance to God, He will give you just the
amount of strength that you will need for the task that is at
hand.
Sufficiency Through The Worship Of God ? Psalm 84:9-12
God never forgets His people. He is a far better shield
than any armor that men can provide. He protects and
defends His children. "Thine anrnted" in verse nine
seems to refer to the king of Israel, whose leadership was
closely related to the welfare of the nation. His failure to
worship God would have an adverse effect upon his people,
for no man is sufficient in and of his own strength for such a
major task as had been committed to him as king.
One day in the presence of God in His house, in personal
communion with Him, is far better than a thousand days
spent elsewhere in fellowship with sinful men. Time cannot
be spent in any other pursuit comparable in benefit to that
spent in the genuine worship of God. Time spent in worship
ping God elevates one's thoughts, riches his life, and pro
motes his spiritual growth.
To His people God is a sun and a shield. In nature the sun
dispenses light, imparts life, radiates warmth, gives beau
ty, and produces fruit. As the sun radiates light to show us
the way, a shield is to ward off enemies, protect us from
evil, and give security. God does not bargain or sell, but He
gives grace and glory. Without God's gift of grace ? kind
ness to the underserving, favor to the guilty, love to those
who deserve wrath, and mercy to the lost ? there is neither
help nor hope for men. Only through grace can glory be
reached. God will not withold from His faithful worship
pers anything that will really contribute to their well being.
Appearing in God's presence and praising Him for what
He has done, in periods of genuine, spiritual, and public
worship, always results in the impartation ofnstrength and
the begetting of high purposes.
