Home economists hold region meet "All feelings are impor tant." "Listen for feel ings." "I accept you as you ?re." Those comments were made by Mrs. Minnie Wood of Camden as speaker at the Northeast Region Home Economics Association meeting held March 2 in Elizabeth City. Fourteen counties in the Northeast make up this pro fessional group which met for dinner at the Pas quotank County Extension Office. Included were representatives' from Per quimans County. According to president Ila M. White, from Hert ford, a highlight of the meeting were plans for a Seafood Workshop to be held Aug. 17 at the Marine Resources Center in Manteo, N.C. This educa tional event will be spon sored by the North Carolina Department Marine Affairs in Raleigh. The Director is J.C. Jones of Raleigh. Par ticipants in the workshop will learn the latest in marine research, iden tification, selecting and buying seafood, how to cook and clean crab and shrimp. Filleting and freezing fish, preparation of foods from trash fish and use of oysters, scallops, and clams will also be featured in workshop discussions. Registration must be to Doris Hawkins of Elizabeth City by June 1. Mary Vann of Murfrees boro was appointed to be a delegate to the Public Policy Workshop, May 11-13 at East Carolina University sponsored by AHEA. Callie Harwicke from Currituck gave a report and talk about the visibility of home economics. She en couraged each county to locate home economists and provide an opportunity to get together. Reports of county ac tivities were also heard. Frances Ward from Edenton, fellowship chair man, recognized the follow ing: Jane Taylor from Har rells ville, 1978 Home Economist of the Year; Daisy Bembry from Eden ton, 1977 Northeast Region Teacher of the Year; and Gaye Howell of Hertford, Chairman of the State Nutrition Committee. Emily White, hospitality chairman from Elizabeth City, gave the welcome. Juanita Bailey from Wind sor gave the devotional. Minnie Taylor from Hert ford acted as secretary. Slides of the Annual NCHEA meeting were shown. G?ye Howell gave a report of the nutrition com mittee. Nina White of Hert ford reported on the membersliip committee. Vice-Chairman Mary Cowper from Gatesville reported on programs. Historian Doris Hawkins gave a report. And Chairman-Elect Jane Taylor reported on awards and budgets. HofHer of 323 Dobbs St., Hertford, is now wearing a distinctive service ribbon a as a member of an '? organization which recent ly received its fifth U.S. Air y Force Outstanding Unit Award. Major Hoffler is com mander of the 513th Securi ty Police Squadron at Mildenhall RAF Station, England, with the 513rd Tactical Airlift Wing that earned the award for meritorious service from July 1,1975 to June 30, 1976. The major, a 1958 graduate of Perquimans County Union High School in Winfall, received a B.S. degree from North Carolina College, Durham, N.C. He received his commission in 1964 upon completion of Of ficer Training School, Lackland AFB, Tex. He earned an M.B.A. degree in 1974 at the University of Missouri. His wife, Ruby, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Solomon Kimbrough of 808 Roanoke Ave., Mem phis, Tenn.
