Special competition planned
The Albemarle Babe
Ruth League and the
Perquimans Recreation
Department will sponsor a
Pitch, Hit, and Run com
petition and hot dog lunch
for boys ages 13, 14, and 15
on Saturday, April 1 beginn
ing at 10 a.m. at the Per
quimans High School field.
The boys will compete in
three age groups: 13, 14,
and IS. A winner and
runner-up will be selected
from each.
At the same time, boys
will be registering to play
Babe Ruth Baseball this
summer. The Babe Ruth
League will have a 13-year
old division which will run
through April and May.
When completed, the 13
year olds will go to the big
league. Recreation Direc
tor Billy Wooten feels that
giving the 13-year olds the
extra time to adapt to the
different field and rules will
lessen the problems they
will have in the big league.
"They (the 13-year olds)
will actually get the op
portunity to play first
against 13-year olds, and
then against the 14 and 15
year olds," he said. "Also,"
he continued, "this should
certainly help our 13-year
old All-Star team."
Wooten lists the ad
vantages of Babe Ruth ball
as travel, play against bet
ter competition, and
several extras, such as a
planned trip to Baltimore,
Md. to see a weekend of Ma
jor League baseball, which
only boys in the Babe Ruth
program will have the op
portunity to participate in.
Wooten says the boys
should fill out a participa
tion form, which were
passed out in the schools,
and bring the fee to play,
which is $5. If a boy needs a
form, or more information,
he should contact the
Recration Department.
This program is open to all
boys in Perquimans Coun
ty.
In case of rain on the day
of the competition and
registration, registration
only will be held in the high
school gymnasium. The
cookout will be
rescheduled.
hgg hunt tomorrow
The Perquimans Recrea
tion and Parks Department
will sponsor and Easter
Egg Hunt Friday, (tomor
row) March 24 at 10:30 a.m.
at the Hertford Grammar
School. The event is for
children 10 years of age or
younger.
Billy Wooten, Recreation
Director, says there will be
lots of prize eggs that can
be redeemed for special
prizes by those that are
lucky enough to find them.
Children should meet in
front of the school at 10:30
a.m. where the event will
be organized. The hunt will
be behind the school. In
case of rain, the hunt will be
held on Saturday, March 25,
same place, same time.
AFTER A HARD SEASON'S PLAY - The
Perquimans County teams participating in
girls' Softball play received a sort of "end
of season reward^' Monday night when
they were given a cookout to top off the end
of league play. The girls gathered at Hert
ford Grammar School to enjoy ham
burgers to to recall heated moments of
play from the season. The Perquimans
teams were sponsored under the direction
of the Perquimans County Recreation and
Parks Department and played the Eden
ton teams sponsored by that city's group.
TO TOP OFF THE MEAL - After a few
had pot away a record number of ham
burgers, the aoftball players gather
around the dessert table to add the topping
to a good meal. After the eookout, the girls
had a recreation session and Recreation
Director Billy Wooten had a few surprise
door prises to gire away in the erening.
