Taped in Gates Countyi the program will feature the problems and successes the people of the area have encountered while trying to bring in quality health care. Gates County had one physician for years, and he is now semi-retired. Because of the lack of health care, Gates has unusually high rates of problems such as hypertensive diseases, certain kinds of cancer, cardio-vascular disorders and a high infant mortality rate. Featured on the program to talk about these problems will be Vincent Collura, president of Gates County Rural Health Service, Inc.; David Perkins, chairman of the building committee; Bill Burgress, Hertford-Gates County Public Health Direc tor, and Dr. Charles Sawyer of Ahoskie. Host for North Carolina News Conference is Richard W. Hatch, director of public affairs for UNC-TV. NEWBERN i While Spring was official ly escorted in on March 20, there are certain signs and activities all around that would signal the arrival of this long awaited season allowing anyone to tell, without aid of a calendar, that the prelude to summer has truly arrived. In Perquimans County, these signs and activities come in a variety of ways. For example... You know it's spring when... ...a lone jonquil bursts into its sunlight of color; ...the tulips bloom on the courthouse green; ...fisherpersons (no chauvinism here) line the causeway; i ...you realize that buzzing sound in the back yard is the lawnmower just taken out of a long storage; ...squeals of delight are audible coming from younsters on bicycles and skateboards; ...Weekend afternoons find the tennis courts filled ; ...the first brave souls can be sighted skiing on Satur day afternoons (complete with wetsuits); ...Pastel fashions and open-toed shoes line store windows; ...you notice the tempting aroma of hamburgers cook ing on an outdoor grill; ...teenagers start an an SUMMER SAVINGS AT WOODLAND DRESS SHOPPE HERTFORD see JACK BURBAGE FOR AZALEAS AND CAMELLIAS HIGHWAY 17 N. 3 MILES FROM HERTFORD. nual pilgrimage to the beach which will last for the next several months; ...you start noticing the famous causeway turtles can be spotted more fre quently on their historical resting point; ...indoor workers start feeling restless and can be spotted gazing out the win dow more than usual; And finally, a sure sign of spring is when newspaper reporters try to fulfill their longing to be outdoors by writing articles about the signs of Spring.
