Poll, a joint effort with the Kettering Foundation, had several First, there was a halt to the six-year decline in public confidence in the schools ? aae that had those polled who would give schools a grade "A" fall from 11 to ? percent. The slight increase in con fidence over last year is not "statistically significant," say the researchers, hot the ratings do seem to indicate that the public is aware of the renewed emphasis on basics in many school districts. The public also beleives more than ever that schools are important to one's future success. How important was asked both in 1973 and in 1M0. The first time, 76 percent of the public said they felt schools were extremely im portant to success; this year the percentage was 82. This year the Gallup Poll has asked people about their confidence in schools as an institution, compared to other institutions in society. The public schools were given a rating of "a great deal of confidence" by U percent of those polled They case in secood behind the church and way ahead ?f the courts, all three levels of government, labor unions and bigbuainess. Of special interest to small school leaders is the result that those living in rural communities and small towns and cities ( under 50,000 population) are the most satisfied with their schools. Several other results relate to the strengths of rural and small schools. For example, the local school board was overwhelmingly chosen to be the goverance level that should have the greatest in fluence in deciding what is taught in the local public schools (68 percent). Also, 85 percent of those polled nationwide believe that parents should be asked to meet with school personnel to work out programs to be followed at school and at home ? an indication that the public favors close family ties with the schools. People in small communities were less likely to approve of strikes by teachers Chorus sets show On Monday night, Dec.
