Winslow hangs up mail bag Eldon Winslow has been hoofing it around Hertford since 1951, warding off dogs, battling the elements, and delivering the mail. on Friday, Dec. 26, Winslow clocked out of the mail-carrying business for the last time. After 29 years of pounding the pavement, he has decided to retire. Although Winslow joked about being "worn out," the trim, 60-year old is anything but. His secret for staying fit? fcercise, of course. Winslow id he has been walking since be was 12 years old, delivering everything from newspapers and milk, to mail. 1 He seldom missed a day of work due to illness, an achievement that won him membership in the "2,000 Hour Club," an honor designating those postal employees who have ac cumulated 2,000 or more hours of unused sick leave. Winslow estimated that be actually totaled some 2,500 hours of unused sick leave, and said he often went to work when feeling under the weather. "You feel about as good working as you do at home," he theorized. Although Winslow's years of making the rounds have allowed him to witness first hand Hertford's changes, he was reluctant to comment, saying only that his route had grown with the town, and that urban renewal projects had allowed for more housing. The postal service has also changed over the years, ac cording to Winslow, becoming "more business oriented than 1 FOR YOUR TOTAL HEALTH CARE NEEDS ALBEMARLE FAMILY HEALTH SERVICES SERVING HERTFORD AND PERQUIMANS COUNTY HOURS MONDAY-FRIDAY 8:30 a.m. ? 5 p.m. TUESDAY NIGHT 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m. SATURDAY 1:30 *~-12 noon \ NO WAITING! Hertford Post Master Henry Stokes said Winslow's record as a postal carrier was "one of the best" in the region. "The postal service is losing one excellent employee." he added. What will Winslow do with his newly-found free time? After all those years of walking and walking and walking, you'd think a man would be tired of walking. Not Winslow, who said he planned to continue his extensive walks, as well as bird hunt, garden, and "try to get some fish out there in the river." He also plans to stay busy with the Perquimans County Rescue Squad. Although he retired from the squad earlier this year, he said he decided to go back when the number of qualified Emergency Medical Technicians on the squad had dwindled. As Winslow put it, "I'm not retired ? I just quit carrying the mail."
