HERTFORD - Mrs. Verna
Skinner Hassell, 73, of 132-35 Sanford
Ave., Flushing, N.Y. died Monday in
J the Flushing Medical Center.

at 2 P.M. in New Haven Missionary
Baptist Church by the Rev. Butler
'Sharpe Jr. Burial was in New
Roadside Cemetery.
Visitation was at Stallings

daughters, Mrs, Rose Parker and

Wilhelmina Jones of Brooklyn, N.Y.;
'three brothers, Raleigh Skinner of
Hertford, Roy Skinner of Glen Coe,
N.Y., and Enock Gregory of
Washington, D.C.; six grand
children; and a great-grandchild.
GREGORY
Raymond James Gregory, 76, of
111 Casey St., died Saturday af
ternoon in Albemarle Hospital after a
long illness.
Funeral services were conducted
Monday afternoon at 2 P.M. in
Twiford's Memorial Chapel, with the
Rev. Robert B. Poole, pastor of
Corinth Baptist Church officiating.
Burial was in Up River Friends
Cemetery in Whitestone with Rev.
Rendel Cosand assisting. The family
was at the home.
Gregory was a native of
Perquimans County and lived in
Elizabeth City for the past 32 years.
He was a carpenter and a member of
the Corinth Baptist Church, where he
was a member of the men's Bible
class. He was the son of the late
William M. and Mrs. Mary Carver
Gregory.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs.
Pauline White Gregory of the home;
one son, J. Marvin Gregory of Rich
mond, Va.; one sister, Mrs.
Margaret Nixon of Hobbsville; and
two grandchildren.
BRANN
Mrs. Pauline Boynton Brann, 37, of
N. Whitefield, Maine, died Monday,
February 14 after a sudden illness.

She was the daughter of Wayne and
Marie Boynton of N. White field and
the wife of Warren Brann and was a
Baptist.
Other survivors include a
daughter. Miss Wanda Brann and a
son, Warren Brann, Jr., both of the
home; a sister and six brothers;
among whom is Linwood Boynton of
Route 2, Hertford.
Funeral services were held
Wednesday, February 16 in Jef
ferson, Maine. Burial was to follow.
Swindell Funeral Home supplied

GREEN
William Garland "Norfolk" Green,
62, died Friday morning in the
Albemarle Hospital.
A funeral was conducted Tuesday
at 3:30 P.M. in the Cornerstone
Missionary Baptist Church with the
Rev. J.E. Trotman officiating. Burial
was in Oak Grove Cemetery with
Walson Funeral Home in charge of
arrangements.
He was the son of the late George
and Ada Johnson Green.
A native of Perquimans County, he
had lived most of his life in Elizabeth
City. He was a member of the Cor
nerstone Missionary Baptist Church
and the Laurel Park Neighborhood
Club. He was employee of the
Colonial Restaurant for a number of
years.
Survivors include two sons,
Richard G. Green of Rosella, N.J.
and Sgt. Linwood P. Green of Ger
many; a step-son, the Rev. Raymond
E. Price of New Bern; three
daughters, Mrs. Barbara J. An
derson of Berlington, N.J., Miss
Linda L. Green aud Miss Ada Estella
Green of Elizabeth City; three
sisters, Mrs. Leila G. Griffin and
Mrs. Edna G. Mann of Elizabeth
City, and Mrs. Sarah G. King of
Newark, N.J.; a foster sister, Mrs.
Estelle G. Collins of Elizabeth City; a
step-mother, Mrs. Lucy Green of
Elizabeth City; and seven grand

SIMPSON
James Clifton Simpson, Sr., SI, of
1113 Park St, a native of Elizabeth
City and the husband of Joyce Newell
Simpson, died Saturday in Albemarle
Hospital.
He was a retired Coast guard petty
officer first class with 20 years of
military service, including duty in
the Korean and Vietnam wars. He
was a member of Mount Hermun
l)nited Methodist Church.
Other survivors include a
daughter, Mrs. Lloyd VaaHorn of
Shiloh; a so*, James C. Simpson, Jr.,
of Elizabeth City; four sisters, Nellie
Edwards and Marjorie Harrell, both
of Elizabeth City, Mavis Harrell of
Hertford and Barbara Mogul Bartlett
of Tennessee;, three brothers,.
Douglas Simpson and Melvin Simp- ;
son, both of Elisabeth City, and
Arthur Simpson of Pawtnekat, R.I.;
and two grandchildren.
A funeral was held at 2 P.M.
Monday in Westlawn Memorial Park
by the Rev. Keith Nanny. Twiford
Memorial Chapel has charge.
A native of Chowan County, she
was the daughter of the late Frank V.
and Mrs. Martha Boyce Byrum and
the wife of the late Miles E. Bunch.
She was a homemaker and a
member of the Rocky Hock Baptist
Church.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs.
Helen Mansfield of Hertford and
Mrs. Pattie Peele of Norfolk, Va.and
one brother, Jesse Byrum of Norfolk,
Va. There are several nieces and
nephews.
Funeral services were conducted
Wednesday at 2 P.M. in the Rocky
Hock Baptist Church with the Rev.
Donald Wagner officiating. Burial
followed in the Byrum Family
Cemetery, Route 1, Edenton.
Williford-Barham Funeral Home

Band chicken fry set February 26
The Perquimans County Band is
sponsorisg a chicken try Saturday,
February 26 from 4-7 P.M. at the high
school cafeteria. The plates are $3.50
and will contain a half of fried
chicken, string beans, potato salad
and a roll. Baked items will also be
on sale.
The Band is trying to raise money
tor a spring trip to Florida to par
ticipate in a marching competition.

Precinct meetings will be March 3
Precinct meetings will be held in
Perquimans County at their polling
places Thursday, March 3 at 8 p.m.
The purpose of the meetings, ac
cording to Estelle Felton, chairman
of the Perquimans Democratic
Party, is to elect delegates to the
county Democratic convention
scheduled April 30 and to elect
precinct officers.
Also scheduled is an executive
meeting of the Perquimans County
Democratic Party March 1 at 7:30
P.M. at the Courthouse.
